Everyone should read, but everyone shouldn't read everything. The amount of crap that gets published is ridiculous. "Chariots of the Gods," for example.Dubious wrote:Only if it leads to thinking. Some people shouldn't read at all.

I see your 'Chariots of the Gods' and I raise you 'Jonathon Livingstone Seagull'.
OK - I liked it too when it appeared - but it's done so much damage to people with flowers for brains.

If so, why and in the process, why not mention the other foundational literature of the West such as the The Illiad or The Odyssey. The latter two are definitely more exciting!

It's bad enough I have to reply to a post. You want me to read it first? That's just crazy talk.

Re: Reading builds brains
I read The Iliad and The Odyssey before I read the Bible, and the former were both better than the latter. Much more interesting, much more to learn from them.

I still haven't met anyone who has credibly claimed to have read the entire Bible, front to back.
Many have the book near the bed and read a bit right before or after sleep.
But I have heard from people who studied theology that they haven't read the entire thing.

I read 101 chapters in a week once, on a bet. Bored out of my mind.

I only got as far as In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. My first reaction was Sez who? Nevertheless, it doesn't preempt me from loving both the Creation and Adam & Eve story as presented in Haydn's oratorio, Die Schopfung (The Creation).

I remember trying to read all the begatting, and not being able to follow any of it. I've never been good with names, but GAH! A list of random numbers is more interesting.

Re: Reading builds brains
Eh. I like the Bible. I’ve read it before and I’m currently reading the King James version on my phone. I’m not the only atheist who likes the Bible. Robert M. Price, a Bible scholar, is with me on this.

What does the PP column represent? Sometimes there's no number there. When there is a number, it's either an integer from 1 to 5 or else it's 10.

One summer I went through a kick where I read the holy books for a bunch of religions: The Bible (including the Apocrypha but not some of the more obscure books like Jubilees), the Quran, The Book of Mormon, a collection of writings by Baha'u'llah, a bunch of books collecting Greek, Roman, Norse, and Egyptian myths, and the Zoroastrian avesta. I also read some Hindu books but I don't remember if they were the vedas or something else. And I got audited by the Scientologists but I couldn't make myself read any of their nonsense.

I'd prefer the former, but expect the latter.
