I'm pro-gun but anti-stupidity so that doesn't allow me to align myself with the NRA or the right or any of their ilk and the whole 'good guy vs a bad guy with a gun' creates more problems than it solves but I will give credit where it is due.
Good for this mama bear protecting her cubs.

Poor shot mom - the man didn`t die. I suspect that she got lucky that the car went out of control and hit the utility pole - as he might still have disarmed her and taken revenge on her and her kids.

...She fired a single shot to his face, she said.

“I’m not a killer, but I do believe in defending what’s mine,” she told Fox 4. “I hope that woke him up.”...

...[The man] was charged with unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of motor vehicle.

I'm against car-jacking, shooting people in the face, and leaving a 2- and a 4-year-old alone in a car with a loaded handgun in the glove compartment.

I completely missed the fact that she left two unaccompanied children in a car alone in a vehicle. That's not very smart.
But I'm not against shooting bad guys in the face.

Why the weak charges? I'd think Kidnapping and Grand Theft Auto bring higher penalties??

I was in a bar in Albuquerque in 2010, during the Balloon Festival. Two guys got into an argument and one shot the other. The man was shot made the mistake of not falling down, he went for his own gun. Three patrons shot him, thinking he was the original shooter.

Booze and guns, I recommend them.

I've always thought of balloons as being very unsafe.

If they were strapped in their car seats, they probably wouldn't have had time to unbuckle the straps and get it but that doesn't excuse her behavior.
I realize that I was quick to share this story now that you've pointed out her extreme carelessness. I'm just glad it ended without the death of the kids. This woman was lucky, not smart.

Yes, buckles might have saved her children from her gun.

I'm too lazy to read it again, so I'll just ask: Did the story mention how the man managed to drive the car away? I mean, did she leave the engine running? Did she leave the key in the ignition? Did he have his own key, somehow? Or did he hotwire the car?

People die every day from gunshot wounds inflicted by other people who just found a gun, under the cushions, in the center console, one guy "safely stored" his gun in the broiler on his stove. His gf turned the oven on and got a bullet in the guts.

Guns are called equalisers. That means that anyone can be a murderer.
Recent case. 92 year old woman. Son wanted her in an old age care home. She did not want to go, so she shot her son dead. See ! Equal.

Kinda an interesting story. Mom demands things her own way and screw what other people want or generally good advice. Her son is exactly the same. In a conflict ..... what happens? I think Ibsen in "Dollhouse" had somewhat a relevant passage where someone shot someone else and when recalling the occurrence called the gun used "a resolver." Have always admired that wordplay.
