Well, not exactly. There are more gun owners, but due to population increases, they are a smaller percentage of the total population. Also interesting is an increase in female gun owners and a decrease in males.Well, men are more likely to use a gun in their suicide attempts, so... ;)

The point, Paul, is that the drop in murder rate since 1990 is due to fewer people in the youthful, and thus violent, age group. Not due to more guns, or even in spite of more guns. There was a massive increase in murder rate from the mid 1960's for exactly the opposite reason. More young people. Then when the number of those young people fell, due to them growing older, after 1990, the murder rate fell.

There is a thing that supporters of gun 'freedom' fail to recognise. There is another thread in this forum about the way the giant and wealthy sugar corporations manipulated public perception fraudulently to blame saturated fats for high heart diease rates, and thus give sugar sales a free run. Corporations like sugar and tobacco do not hesitate to spread lies and deception to increase sales. The gun makers do exactly the same thing. That is why the USA gets flooded with pro-gun propaganda. People like the Koch Brothers spend hundreds of millions of dollars to create a fake perception of guns so they can sell more, and they make hundreds of billions of dollars out of it. Americans who are pro-gun are usually just the idiots who believe the lies and propaganda.

When the argument is about PERCENTAGES OR RATES, liars will always confuse the issue by including raw numbers.

Remember how Obama was going to ban guns? This drove crazy increases in gun sales. But of course it never happened, because he was never going to do so. It was just fearmongering - no doubt aimed at getting a sheeple population to buy more guns. When Hillary is elected it will repeat.

The interesting thing, though TJ, is that those increases in gun sales were to people who already owned guns. There was no increase in the number of gun owners. Only the nutters responded by wasting their money.

Wishful thinking on your part. There has been an increase in new first-time buyers applying for permits to buy guns. The increase is most obvious in the increase of women and gays seeking protection. The LGBT gun club "Pink Pistols" reported a 46% increase in membership after Orlando.

Paul: on its face, what you posted is probably true BUT does not negate what TJ has posted. Do you not understand numbers that poorly?

The gun makers capitalise on any suggestion of new gun control laws. "They are gonna take away your guns. Quick. Compensate by buying more." And the idiots go out and waste their money by buying more guns. Duh! It always amazes me how corporations (in this case the giant gun makers) manage to manipulate the idiocy of so many people.
