Cut gun murders 80%?

Postby Lance Kennedy » Sat Mar 12, 2016 10:14 pm

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... ce+News%29

Boston University suggests three laws, enforced by all 50 states, would cut gun murders by 80%.

1. All firearms identified by microstamping.
2. All ammunition identified at point of sale.
3. Every gun sale requiring police approval beforehand.

I am a bit cynical in that I know the nasty bastards out there will look for ways around laws, but if it looks as if simple changes can make possible the saving of a few thousand lives each year, why not?

I thought ammunition was "identified" post use by markings on the bullet. Ammunition by its specific formula perhaps but seems too generic for criminal use.

What tech is involved here?

The law should be: Every gun registered avoiding how it was obtained. Caught with an unregistered gun? That would be jail.

Bobbo

Like lots of things reported by Hollywood, forensic testing of bullets is over-stated. Sometimes the markings on bullets will solve a crime, but more often, no unique markings can be found.

That makes sense....and I have seen a few shows where the bullet is too squashed to give an id....rare on tv, but I've seen it.

so...........how is "ammunition" identified?

Here in America, the way we ID bullets is if they are in brown people, they are good. If they are stored or otherwise idle, they are bad.

Sounds like clip size is the important variable?

It ain't the size of your gun, it's the hole you leave behind

Clip sizes of 0 might work.
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Egregious missed one important point. The gun only has so many round.

Aw, damn! Once again I am tricked by my own misreading of a thread title.

This has nothing to do with cat guns that have an 80% murder success rate. At all.

Cat gun murders 80%?

GAT gun murders 80%.

But if you get a coupon in the mail you can use it to save another 5% on any murders over 10,000.

You have to vary your game. Joggers for a while, kids in the park for a while, then the old "help me get this furniture in the van" game, and so on. Stay fresh!

GUN TALK
. . . terms and definitions you should know.
Your gun fires 750 to 850 shots a minute—14 shots a second. The bullets, weighing nearly two ounces each, leave the barrel at 1,977 miles an hour—2,900 feet a second. This speed is called the muzzle velocity. Even at a distance of four miles—the gun's maximum range—one of those bullets will kill a man.

That's 105 pounds of lead A MINUTE, if someone wanted to abuse the gun. I had two of them in the power tub, so 210 pounds a minute.
