The definition of insanity is wrong

Postby Monster » Mon Jan 11, 2016 4:11 pm

This is the popular definition of insanity, as attributed to A. Einstein.

Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.

I disagree with that definition of insanity. It would mean that all heterosexual men are insane by attempting to woo women, and after failure, trying again, expecting different results.

There are other similar things I could mention, such as musicians making music, expecting better results with each released song/album.
Listening twice as much as you speak is a sign of wisdom.

I might suggest that wooing person A is slightly different from wooing person B, and slightly different again from wooing person C.

Or have I missed your point?

I don't know if I had a point.

Your point is that persistence towards a worthwhile goal in the absence of other engaging alternatives should not be confused with insanity.

By that definition, everyone who has ever hit an elevator button more than once was insane at the time.

Hey, every time I do that - it is that last push that produces results.... :) except, there are now elevators in which a second push cancels the first ( with the floor selection buttons)...

What if they both start with: "I should kill this idiot, but I won't."?

This makes total sense. I will occasionally write a particular guitar "riff". The "riff' sounds great but I can never get it to fit into "other bits' and make a whole song. Twenty years later I will still practice that riff magically hoping something will pop into my head. It never does, yet I keep practising that" riff".

I assume Pyrrho will now boot me off the forum.
:D
