Motivational Seminars are putting your sole at risk

Postby ElectricMonk » Fri Jun 24, 2016 3:59 pm

I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Motivational speaker Robbins' coal walk burns more than 30...

...In a statement to the AP, representatives for Robbins said about 7,000 people walked across the coals and only five "requested any examination beyond what was readily available on site."...

Does that mean the other 25+ weren't motivated enough to request examination? :heh:

It means that the rest were too baffled by BS to look after their own health and well-being. Tony Robbins turned 7,000 adults into humans needing a keeper to prevent them mistaking a Weber grill for a foot massager.

Fire walking can be done safely. I do not know what went wrong at this event. Thousands of people have walked on burning coals with no injury. The requirement is that the hot stuff is all material with low rates of heat transfer, and that the walkers keep their feet moving, so that neither foot is in contact long enough for a burn.

Simple experiment for your self. Put a piece of wood and a piece of metal in the oven, and turn on high for ten minutes. Then using bare fingers, take each piece out, juggling them so that there is no contact with your bare skin for more than a moment or two. The wood will not burn you, since the rate of transfer of heat from wood to skin is slow. If you are stupid enough to lift out the metal, then you will deserve the burn that will result.

Fire walkers have feet in contact with something very hot that nevertheless has a very slow rate of heat transfer. If they keep their feet moving, so that the skin is in contact for mere moments, there will be no burn.

But if there is no woo involved, what is the motivation?

Of course, when people walk over hot coals without burning their feet, motivational speakers are prone to telling a bullsh*t story about why. Like the power of positive thinking or other such garbage. One thing no positive thinking can overcome is the laws of physics.

Incidentally, if you want to try the oven experiment I suggested, please do not lift out the metal object with bare fingers. It WILL burn you. Transfer of heat from metal to other things is very fast. From wood, it is slow and you will get away with lifting the wood out of the oven with bare fingers, as long as you juggle it to avoid contact for more than a second or so. Instead, lift the metal out with tongs and place it on a block of wax. The hot metal will melt the wax quickly, since it transfers heat to the wax also quickly. Hot wood on wax will not melt it at all quickly since the transfer of heat is slow.
