Munchausen by Internet

Postby Cadmusteeth » Fri Sep 08, 2017 9:56 pm

Munchausen by Internet is a term coined by psychiatry professor Dr. Marc Feldman to describe the online manifestation of the mental disorder called Munchausen Syndrome, i.e., people who fake their own illness. People with Munchausen by Internet join online social groups and pretend to be ill because they crave the attention, care, and sympathy that sick people get. They do it to get attention and lenience, act out anger and jealousy, and/or control others. This type of behavior is on the rise online, so it’s helpful to learn how to recognize it and how to react when you do encounter it.

Yes, I found this on Tumblr but I found this interesting non the less. You can check out the rest in the link:

I've seen a couple of case online over the years. The first one involved a male who pretended to be a female, then when he decided to stop, he claimed "she" had advanced breast cancer and probably had only a few weeks left to live. There was a great outpouring of sympathy and affection. And then "she" died.

Later someone who knew the guy posted about him online, and the folks who had loved "her" where horrified to learn how they'd been played for years. It wasn't just about Munchausen, though -- this guy had pretended for a long time that he was a woman, and many of the people he fooled had felt like they knew "her" very well.

Good grief! Are people really that desperate for attention these days?
...it used to be so simple, once upon a time.
Because the universe was full of ignorance all around and the scientist panned through it like a prospector crouched over a mountain stream, looking for the gold of knowledge among the gravel of unreason, the sand of uncertainty, and the little whiskery eight-legged swimming things of superstition.

Oi, oi. These forums are one of the oldest and last bastions of freedom of personal expression.

I really don't care who or what you are, or pretend to be, so long as you're not a dickhead about it.
This being was produced using the same process as other beings, and therefore, may contain traces of nuts.
