Clive Owen

He's English. He can be nasty. He can wear a Royal Navy Commander's uniform. He looks like a central European and can play foreign under cover scenarios. He's good actor.

Peter Sellars was actually the most realistic James Bond. A narcissistic, sarcastic, thirty year old intelligence officer, who walked over or screwed everyone, to get the tid-bits he was after, while the SVR of the KGB kept him on his toes.

There is no "00".

The Brits, like the Australians and Canadians use trained weapon experts, to do "wet jobs" from specific army SAS and SBS regiments. Commonwealth officers of the non military intelligence services ( SIS, ASIS, CSIS.) don't play with guns because then the Russians will pull out their SVR officers (KGB) and use GRU ( Russian army intelligence officers), who shoot everyone and ask questions later.
:D

In the original book James Bond was not an intelligence officer at all. He was a commander in the British Navy recruited by the SIS, because he was an expert on playing Baccarat.

I think Tom Hiddleston would do nicely.
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Daniel Radcliffe.

But he's only 5'5" so they'll have to build really tiny sets for him.

Charles Bronson was shorter, and they built catwalks on the set so he could look his leading lady in the eye. I had a friend who was the same height and comfortable with that. He said it put him mouth right at nipple height on his girlfriend. She smiled smugly when he said that. 8-)

Meanwhile, Felix Lighter has been black, white, brown, and at least two different sexes. So the next one should be Ru Paul, to combine all the above.

(But then, who would play Mr. Moneypenny?)

As the sun finishes setting on the British Empire, Wallace Shawn might be a good choice for the next Bond.

Fair enough. :D

If you read the original James Bond novels, they have nothing to do with the movies. Nothing much actually happens in the novels.

In the novel "Dr No" James Bond hunts down a fellow who grow plants, that could be made to make a poison that could be imported into the Kingdom. ( No nuclear reactors)

In "Diamonds are Forever' James bond break a US Mafia diamond smuggling racket. ( no space ships and lasers)

In "Goldfinger" James Bond breaks a German gold smuggling racket. ( No robbing of Fort Knox)

In "Casino Royale", Bond bankrupts a KGB payroll officer, at cards, who has been embezzling money, so the KGB shoot their own payroll officer. (SMERSH was a real organisation. It means Death to Spies in Russian....which means shooting Russian traitors and embezzlers)

It's all plausible "bread & butter"work, from the Royal Navy's policing of smuggling, because Ian Fleming was a naval officer, who heard tales about the policing from other officers.

......and may I remind everyone, the first James Bond was played by an American actor.

( This early movie is the reason why, the rights for Casino Royale were owned by another movie company and why it was a late movie in the series, although the very first Ian Fleming novel, in the series, in which James Bond is asked to join the UK's post war SIS.

I agree, He did a great job in The Night Manager, can do nasty very well, is handsome, well dressed, and very British. All they need to do is get him on Hugh Jackman's steroid regimen and he's perfect.

My second choice would be Idris Elba, but he's too old to play the role for more than two films.
