Image help

Postby Poodle » Fri Feb 02, 2018 6:11 pm

I'm sure I've been here before. Someone PLEASE tell me, in very simple words, how to get an image from the net to show up in my posts. I've tried everything I can think of and no joy.
Image
See? That will happily open in a new tab but not right here where I want it.

You can copy the pic to your desktop and upload it as an attachment too.

I'm on a Mac, so the process is a twitch different for me. Right click on the image and choose "copy image address." Then, in here, click the "mountains and sunset" icon, which generates the BB Code image tags, and paste what I copied between them. The only time it doesn't work is when the website that is hosting the image I chose has coded to prevent hot links. Let's see if your image link works for me...
Image

Nope. So, I loaded the image link into my browser bar. When I right clicked on it, a box popped up saying, "You need to attribute the author," with a click box labeled, "Show me how." I'm guessing the image is coded so that you can't hot link to it without attribution. Also, I noticed something...
The link you used was:

Code: Select all

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargazy_pie#/media/File:StargazyPie.jpg

The link eggs used successfully was:

Code: Select all

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/23/StargazyPie.jpg/1280px-StargazyPie.jpg

The "imgfit" tag is supposed to reduce the size of the image to whatever maximum size is allowed by the forum, but the tag appears to have been discontinued. Allegedly, you can add meta information to the "img" tag:

Code: Select all

[img width="100" height="50" alt="Lubeck city gate" title="This is one of the medieval city gates of Lubeck"]https://www.bbcode.org/images/lubeck_small.jpg[/img]
...but it doesn't work in this forum.

In the full editor, right below it, there's a tab which is "Attachments". I use that. It has a limitation for file size though.

I have never been able to post an image from wikipedia on the forums with a direct link. I assumed it was wikipedia preventing direct linking. There are some other websites that do not allow it either.

The "imgfit" tag is supposed to work by using this replacement HTML, which I think is deprecated in these modern times:

Code: Select all

<img src="{URL}" width="99%"/>

I just revised that to use inline CSS style width code:

Code: Select all

<img src="{URL}" style="width:99%"/>

I think the system here is stripping out the colon from the image link. That or the # sign is breaking it.

Well the way it's supposed to be used is that you put the image URL between the tags:

Code: Select all

[imgfit]http://www.throwbacks.com/content/images/2017/06/men-in-black-1.jpg[/imgfit]

Only valid image formats are going to work. If you put a link to web page in there...GIGO.

I could probably edit the code for that but fooling with the default forum code is frowned upon these days. I could add a new bbcode that does it, with a max-width setting to prevent well-meaning people from breaking the forum layout with ludicrous width inputs.

It's probably not necessary with this bunch. It's rare to see an image posted that's so large, it breaks the layout. Personally, I take the time to find a version of the image that isn't ridiculously large. If I can't, I enclose it in spoiler tags. That way, if the huge image breaks the layout, it's only temporary (until the spoiler is closed again).

"imgfit" is redundant anyway, because the default "img" tag uses this CSS style.

Code: Select all

.postbody img.postimage {
   max-width: 100%;
   -webkit-box-sizing: border-box;
   -moz-box-sizing: border-box;
   box-sizing: border-box;
}

That actually happend often in the Firefly Fan Forum. The effect woud be that the text for all posts on a paje woud rap sumwhere past the border uv the post boxez so you coudnt see it. I dont know if Haken (owner) fixed it or not- haznt happend in a wile.

OK, let me try agen:

HEY! It worked!

Definitely not ready for prime time tho. I copy/pasted the address in between the imgfit tagz, rite klikt on a blank area uv the paje, klikt 'view source', then found the background picture name, saw that its the same az the paje name except jpg insted uv html, so chanjed the html to jpg in the pasted address.

Remindz me uv a little movieola from the 50z about the miraculous new automatic tranzmission that wuz so simple, even a woman coud uze it. Simply press the disengajement pedal with your left foot wile litely holding the akseleratrix, then squeez the cabulator trigger and modulate the gear selector to the dezired ratio inversion governor! Thats all there iz to it! (exept uv course obviously to reverse the proseedure to continue forward at an increasing velosity.)
