Wikipedia

Operation Northwoods was a proposed false flag operation against the Cuban government, ... The operation proposed creating public support for a war against Cuba by blaming it for terrorist acts that would actually be perpetrated by the US ...
(my bolding)
Emphasis on "proposed". The capabillity to enact such an opperation isn't good evidence that our government has done so today.

From the days of Spartacus-Weishaupt to those of Karl Marx, and down to Trotsky (Russia), Bela Kun (Hungary), Rosa Luxembourg (Germany), and Emma Goldman (United States), this world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality, has been steadily growing. It played, as a modern writer, Mrs. Webster, has so ably shown, a definitely recognizable part in the tragedy of the French Revolution.

It has been the mainspring of every subversive movement during the Nineteenth Century; and now at last this band of extraordinary personalities from the underworld of the great cities of Europe and America have gripped the Russian people by the hair of their heads and have become practically the undisputed masters of that enormous empire.

In War.... you get reports about possible or planned attacks at every place there is. You have to confirm and place your resources as best determined. Its called chatter at best, and an intelligence failure at worst. Allowing the enemy to attack first when you KNOW they are actually doing it rather than just planning it................ is debateable, I can see doing it if Honolulu Bay was devoid of Big Ships.... was all the aircraft carriers being out at sea just a coincidence?

Probably not. They were probably following the orders they'd been issued - whatever they were.

All of the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyers recently turned up in port at the same time. The press had a field day. Actually, they were all scheduled to do just that. Bad planning, certainly - but that's about all.

Well the carriers not being in port is sometimes reported as evidence that FDR knew the attack was coming and didn't want to stop it....but still protected the critical resource. I've always been surprised/amazed at how fast the US recovered from that attack...... almost like it was a really stupid thing for Japan to do.... and really did unify the USA in a way that it wasn't. I don't expect, or even desire, that kind of Machiavellian leadership from our greedy graft filled carpet baggers.

You'll correct me if I'm wrong but, at that time, everything I've read points out that carriers were regarded as support vessels rather than the star act. If this is correct, the four battleships which were sunk would have been regarded as much more important - yet there they were.

I've read that Battleships were recognized as "old tech" during WW2 when there was a huge shoot out between England and Germany in the North Sea? I think the Brits had a Pyrrhic Victory but the limitations/cost/benefit of Battleships was revealed then.

When "exactly" air craft carriers became the platform of choice EXPRESSLY is not known to me....but didn't we have about as many carriers as Battleships and NO battleships were being built while a/c's were???

And.... just as a matter of fact, not that generals are usually 1-2-3 wars behind.... aren't a/c and subs the premium weapons... WW2 and now.

Battle of the Denmark Straits. Bismarck sunk Hood, damaged Prince of Wales. Proved battleships can sink battleships.

It was far from a foregone conclusion on Dec. 7th, 1941, but knowing how the war came out gives us great hindsight. We stopped building battleships during the war, but we're still building aircraft carriers.

Probably not. They were probably following the orders they'd been issued - whatever they were.

They were taking aircraft to Wake and Midway Islands. Washington directed this be done, but left the details to Adm. Husband E. Kimmel and his subordinate admirals. Two admirals, Brown and Halsey, led the missions. Halsey, in Enterprise was slowed down due to heavy seas or they would have been into Pearl on Dec. 6th.

Eight battleships were sunk or damaged, all but two of them, Arizona and California were returned to duty.

Thanks.

By Jacqui Goddard in Miami 8:00AM GMT 04 Dec 2011
It was described by President Franklin D.Roosevelt as "a date that will live in infamy", a day on which the slaughter of 2,400 US troops drew America into Second World War and changed the course of history.
Now, on the 70th anniversary of Japan's devastating bombardment of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, evidence has emerged showing that President Franklin D.Roosevelt was warned three days before the attack that the Japanese empire was eyeing up Hawaii with a view to "open conflict."
The information, contained in a declassified memorandum from the Office of Naval Intelligence, adds to proof that Washington dismissed red flags signalling that mass bloodshed was looming and war was imminent.
"In anticipation of possible open conflict with this country, Japan is vigorously utilizing every available agency to secure military, naval and commercial information, paying particular attention to the West Coast, the Panama Canal and the Territory of Hawaii," stated the 26-page memo.
Dated December 4, 1941, marked as confidential, and entitled "Japanese intelligence and propaganda in the United States," it flagged up Japan's surveillance of Hawaii under a section headlined "Methods of Operation and Points of Attack."

Read it. The fact that Japan wanted information on US assets is hardly evidence that they were going to attack Pearl Harbor.

Ms. Jacqui has obviously never heard of the Bomb Plot.

Interesting choice of words. US naval intellegence warned Washington of a possible Japanese attack would have been more correct.

And we were predicting an attack along the line of advance by the Japanese to 南方資源地帯 (Nampo shigen chitai (The Southern Resources Area)) through Malaya and into the Netherlands East Indies and pretty much everything north of Australia. This advance would have the problem of the Philippines on its flank. The Japanese would have to resolve that threat. To strengthen the P.I. Gen. Marshall asked Douglas MacArthur to come back on active duty and take the islands in hand. Mac took on the uniform again on July 24, 1941.
