Help - Best Friend is a Conspiracy Theorist

Postby rafael999 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 5:32 pm

This is dreadful.
My best friend of 25 years sent me a water filtration kit a few weeks ago and is now telling me to hoarde food - get a small tent, sleeping bags etc and be ready.
He first started telling me about planet x 3 years ago promising a tsunami then (in 2012) and also promised £20,000 if it didnt happen. well I never got my money but he's back and september 2016 is the month when planet x will be causing catastrophe.
Earlier in the year he phoned me in a state of panic that a major earthquake would devastate the UK and we would all be dead.
How can I convince him that planet x is not actually anywhere to be detected in the solar system? I have tried telling him that astronomers are tracking small asteroids on the far reaches of the solar system and if there was a planet 7 times the size of the earth in the system, it would be all over the news - but to no avail. the authorities dont want panic.
oh the germans know - that's why they are telling people to stockpile 10 days of food.
It's not just this bull - he also believes the moon hoax etc - 11/9 inside job - it goes on, illuminati, masons - oh and chemtrails even when I told him no meteorologist supports the idea of chemtrails. they are being paid off by the government to keep quiet.
He's a college lecturer in a science based subject and thinks this makes his views sound.
No idea how to deal with him. any suggestions would be welcome.

Unless you're a trained therapist you have no hope of changing his mind. Best you can do is protect yourself and try to help him when he finally goes full on nut-bar. I've been dealing with hardcore CTers since 1966 and they don't change their minds. Your friend is paranoid, and that requires professional help to get him to calm down.

Just tell him you have started to stock up - and make your first purchase some toilet paper. No need to overdo it, but with the low prices a month or two of `emergency` supply should do it. The toilet paper can be your secret reminder of his irrational views and help to keep him in your mind on a daily basis.

You will not be able to convince him, so just cherish your friendship with an obviously somewhat deluded person while keeping a rational mind and approach to your life.

As you seem surprised by his new hobby, this cannot be normal - therefore he's gone full-on nutbag.

There's absolutely nothing you can do about it. Humour him and he'll get worse. Argue with him and he'll get angry. Suggesting he wears a foil hat is probably best all round.

Mind you, having a stock of emergency supplies is not a bad thing.

And for ten days minimum would be something advisable for what one might consider a "normal" emergency - not the imaginary disasters those CTers dream up... maybe you guys could go on a survival vacation weekend. Sounds like sane fun and might give some perspective on reality? :-P

Electronics, it's gotta be something to do with electronics. I've met a lot of nuts who are into electronics. Computers and resistors and solder. I wonder if he's aware that solder smoke causes zombism?

A few things come to mind.

1. Get him an issue of skeptic that's not about conspiracies and ask him to read it.
2. Try to convince him that one of his smaller theories is false. Then move on to the next one and so on.
3. Do nothing because he's hopelessly insane.

I typically do #3 with my friends who believe illogical things.

Yes I see.

Such a weird one to happen as he was always telling me - check the empirical evidence before reaching a conclusion. No idea what happened to his brains. Alarm bells started ringing when I realised he was phoning me and reading off some conspiracy nonsense and ever time I interrupted to object he was say "I'm just reading you what it says!" as if that gives it some validity.
On planet x he has promised to send me some documentation but nothing has arrived so far.

I asked him what his family (sister, brothers) think of his claims - he says they think he has gone mad.

I'm not really responding to gorgeous, but I was thinking about this the other day. I grew up with Nixon, saw unleaded gas become the standard, and was as a victim of tobacco companies advertising to teens. I also watched all of those things get exposed and, for the most part, corrected, plus several others. You would think I'd have every reason to not trust my government or science, or corporations, or anybody. But it's not about trusting faceless groups that don't have a single voice, it's the methods for determining truth. Those are universal. Things like knowing what "theory" means, or the difference between "expert" and "authority", or reading beyond the headline and into the methodology used in an experiment.

It just wouldn't occur to me that NASA or Hillary or even the Bush family were involved in a conspiracy.

I have seen some perfectly intelligent people just break. I think it's hard to maintain trust in a world when knowledge is accumulating so fast. And there are a lot of bad people out there. If you are around enough of them for long enough, it's easy to just give up and believe in demons.
