What I saw is still unexplained...

Postby itsreal » Sat Aug 20, 2016 9:50 am

Hello skeptics,

I've been waiting around for years for an answer to what I saw wayyyy back in 1999. To this day, my questions have not been answered. Back in 1999, I was an 18 year old adolescent, and I was out with friends late one night. That night was stormy, low cloud cover, and there were even reports of tornadoes touching down. At the time I was living in Milton Ontario, and it was about 1 am when I was driving home alone after being with my friends in town. There is a terrain feature called the Niagara Escarpment there, which was essentially formed during the ice age, large sheets of ice pushed the dirt up and formed a long ridge, about 100 feet or so. I lived in a house on the escarpment, and I was driving home. There is a long stretch of road there called Steeles Avenue, and there is a 2km straight stretch before that road winds up the escarpment. I noticed from that distance a low flying aircraft. I was worried at first because I thought I was going to witness a plane crash. But as I drove closer, straight towards it, it became quite apparent that the craft was actually stationary, or hovering in the same spot. I could only discern the 2 white lights at either end of the wings, however my path home was heading straight towards it. Of course, I started freaking out a little bit. I kept driving towards it, and by the time I had reached the base of the hill I was 100% certain I was coming into close contact with a UFO. The road started winding around some trees, and I lost view of the craft. This of course can only mean it was very low to the ground. I rounded the trees, and then I saw it, clear as day. It was in the midst of turning 45 degrees on a dime, hovering in the same position. It was about 75 feet in the air. I literally drove right underneath it, threw the car in park, opened my door and looked up at it. It was about 30 feet long, had a cockpit, the nose of the craft sloped downwards. It had 2 small canards at the front of fuselage, and large delta wings which swept inwards from the rear. There was no tail wing, it was pretty flat other than the nose which sloped downwards. It moved over top of me at about 2 km /hour and all I could hear was my radio. I assume it was silent. It slowly kept moving over my head, and then I made a quick decision to get the hell out of there as fast as I could.

Since then, I've looked far and wide for any evidence that other people had seen this. So far I may be the only one. I would like to say it was man made, it even had the correct red and green lighting underneath the fuselage to properly identify the forward and aft of the craft. There was nothing normal about this however. I'm hoping someone might know more about what I had witnessed. The memory is vivid, this thing actually does exist. I could have thrown a rock at it. Please someone, what did I see???

Of all possible explanations you go with flying saucer?

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Hmmm. A hovering aircraft which had correctly-coloured navigation lights switched on. The only unusual thing there would be where it was. Other than that, it sounds just like a VTOL aeroplane as used by common or garden humans.

So you admit that you are challenged by what I saw? It is certainly not the the one presented in the photo above. Perhaps it was some sort of secret military plane, but I did not see any downward facing jet propulsion system, there was no sound other than my radio as I said and it was 1999. There were no markings on the craft whatsoever. And why would it be all the way up in Ontario Canada? I tell you all this, if I had a video camera that day, we wouldn't be here speculating on whether it was some common airplane. I do regret not sticking around and following it however. Sometimes, you can't explain it. I haven't been able to in 17 years anyways. Delta wing, sweeping inward from the rear, no tail fin. Flat. Nose sweeps downard, like a concord jet. It's still out there, somewhere. I'm just letting you all know about it.

That's not a clear description, I think. You need to improve this to avoid confusion. Common or garden delta wings sweep inward from the rear. Do you mean sweeping forward from the rear (e.g. the one in the photo), which would mean that it wasn't a delta wing in the first place?

And - how do you know which end was front, or rear? Maybe the front was one of what you took to be a side, or even the top, or bottom.... might it have been a giant humming bird? I hear that they are nearly silent, hover, have a downward tilting `front`, etc.

Also – since this was back in 1999, why do you think that we might be able to identify it? Only you saw it. You have no evidence. You have no police or news reports, etc. – right? Nothing for us to go on other than your post?

We have one version of events, clearly slanted toward flying saucers. That's not enough to give you the confirmation you need.

Well, you won't believe this but it landed in my backyard. The alien got out, drank one of my beers, grabbed a sausage off the bbq, pinched my wife's bottom and left. "Sometimes, you can't explain it... I'm just letting you all know about it"

How was it lit? You say it was very late at night. Are there streetlights there?

People often miscalculate distances, especially when something is above them. It's 90 feet between bases on a baseball diamond. A typical street light is probably going to be around 25 to 30 feet tall.

(Milton has about 8,000 streetlights: http://www.milton.ca/en/live/streetlighting.asp

Did you know that we have over 8,000 streetlights in urban and rural Milton?

What an interesting question! No, I did not know that.)

tall - also means exaggerated. That is a bit tall. So a tall tale is an exaggerated tale.

As I understand it, "tall" used to have other connotations, including "remarkable" [OED calls "remarkable" a sense evolution of "tall"]and "exaggerated". Before the term "tall tale" became popular, there was the previous but very similar term "tall story".

1998??

The further in the past an event is, the more likely that the witness gets it all wrong.

Funny isnt it - in 1999 you can forgive him for not having at hand a mobile phone with inbuilt camera - 90% of drivers I would think in his position would be able to take a photo in todays world.

So in the last 10 years we have precisely 0 photos of hovering UFO's despite people having the means and technology to capture evidence. People take video of crashing planes and this is an incredibly rare event. But the numbers of ufo sightings has been comparatively high in the past. Yet nobody has a video of a flying saucer.

What does this suggest I wonder. Aliens decided to give visits to earth a break at the same time there was an explosion in mobile camera ownership?

Or everyone in the past who saw a UFO was either lying or mistaken.

Flying saucers are vampires. You can forget about taking their pictures, or seeing them in mirrors.
