Did you know the guy who handled the props for that movie kept them? He was able to loan them out to "Young Fronkenstein."

It amazes me when I hear nonsense like this come out of someone's mouth.

I'll bet that she believes that the Earth is flat, too.

What causes people to believe in something like this? Religion?

A willful refusal to even notice inconvenient facts. My cousins, over 1,000 of them who can attend family reunions, have been taught that anything you don't like is a lie. Happily they're losing the current generation, over half of the college age kids are choosing universities that don't have "Baptist" in their name.

That has a facial appeal, but on a second glance "there is no such thing as culture"....other than it being a catch all label for what some group of people kinda mostly decide to do? So, dig down a layer. Its why I always blame Darwin. We are what we are because of our dna. That dna expresses itself in fairly direct way but with various looks. "I believe...♫...Yes, I do, I do, because I do..." that culture is mostly a Darwinian adaption for survival: kiddies believing what their parents tell them. Kiddies that do that survive more often than those who don't. From parents to family to clan to tribe to city....the comedy pyramid just grows. DNA is the great conveyor of "knowledge". The second is: culture. DNA is informed by survival of the fittest. Culture is informed by all sorts of things....the latest and greatest being science.

Survival. Its not about knowing the truth of the Universe. Its about getting your seed reproduced. Two different things. The first requires advanced technology and resources and so forth. The second: only enough food to reach puberty.

But we can call it culture.

Of course there is culture: its in the dictionary after all:::::

"The tastes in art and manners that are favored by a social group" ((Pretty weak as culture covers almost all aspects of life???....but thats what my WebWord says))

Saying culture is just a social construct just invites a different way to look at whatever is being claimed. and..... Look: "favored by a social group".... what is a group?

group: Any number of entities (members) considered as a unit //// So....seems to me you can get one view if you look at the "unit" vs looking at each and every entitie or member.

I object to the term "culture" because it forces fake unanimity where there never is. Just think deeper.

another way to express this idea is that WHATEVER you think culture is, it is still INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE making choices. You can put your emphasis where you wish. All existentialists....... make the same choice.

How much of your time do you spend doing that?

I honestly spend more time scratching my balls, than creating great works.

But if you asked me the time, I'd tell you.

I'd have to take my hand out of my pants to look at my watch, tho'.

Oh? We generally agree to give each other the time of day and not go around with our hands down our pants scratching our nuts? Almost starting to sound like some kind of proto-culture.

As Bobbo was pointing out.

Culture is mostly just behaviour most of us agree about most of the time.

Like, not scratching your balls in public, and telling a stranger the time if they ask.

There are no laws that make us do (or do not) those things. We all just kinda agree which, when and where certain behaviours are appropriate.

I think "I wouldn't give you the time of day" is the worst insult you can ever give anyone.

Thanks MM.

And to GS: I would never say that Opera, literature, philosophy, the humanities is "no such thing" or doesn't exist, or is a human construct. The fact that you would list them as challenges to thinking differently about "CATCH ALL PHRASES" only proves the point you should recognize. Not all words are the same. Some like "culture" are often used to hide things rather than provide clarity. Actually, claims of this or that is our culture, their culture, not our culture etc is just a crude way to try and manipulate and control people. I don't see any group of 320Million as having "a culture."

Do you?

culture: The tastes in art and manners that are favored by a social group. //// How does that apply to 320Million People? How do you have cultural influences if we are one culture? Or...more to the following point: a multi-cultural society?

society: A formal association of people with similar interests /// USA has many cultural and historical roots and components, but we are only one society: by Law.

In word appreciation, you try to avoid thinking two words are just the same. Pure synonyms are much more rare in reality than in common usuage. Thats why there is two different words. Culture and Society: lots of overlap and I assume you could find the very same definition for both words. Compare and Contrast: how best to use these words?
