New (Large) Lizard Discovered

Postby Bart Stewart » Wed Apr 07, 2010 2:54 am

I post this article, not really because it's any kind of a crypto-zoo breakthrough, but more for the statement in there which mentions how rare it is that a new vertebrate of this size (about 6 feet) is discovered. It's a new variety of monitor lizard which lives on fruit and survives in treetops in the Philippines. My guess is that, apart from life in the deep oceans, this represents the top end of the scale for large life forms that can avoid detection on planet Earth. I mean, if we can find something like this, why haven't the superstars of cryptozoology ever turned up? Any larger unknown animal would have been found by now, apart from those in the oceans, maybe.

"New species?!" Pfft! How can anything that's been hunted by humans (and caught -- and eaten!) for centuries be considered a "new species?" To be a truly new species, it would have to be something ... y'know. New! Evolution, baby! Gimme a new species!

I do like this part, though:

The team euthanized the animal and did genetic tests that confirmed it as a unique species....

Reminds me of the Simpsons. "Hey, there's a bug that looks like Dad. Let's kill it!" "Okay!"

Can't they do genetics tests on living animals yet?...

Gord.

Please do not take it personally that all the welcoming back is taking place in a thread titled New (Large) Lizard Discovered.

Unless you want to.

That's exactly it, Cha. I wouldn't want Gord to think that a group of skeptics got them conflated.
