Conflict of roles and believes....

Postby DutchSkeptic » Sat Oct 04, 2014 8:45 am

Hi there!

I am struggling a bit lately with something that you might have encountered as well. I am the chairman of the largest developers community in my area. That means that a lot of (wanna-be) programmers come to me when they have questions. That of course, is exactly why we started this group over a decade ago: to promote knowledge about our trade and help others. We have over 3000 members which means we do have a large group of people we can turn to in case of questions.

Today I received an email from someone who asked me for help with building a piece of software. He says he wants to build it himself but wants some guidance from me. Which, of course, is my role. However, he wants to build software to do some numerology stuff that he then wants to sell. And that is the problem. I think numerology, astrology and other related things are hurtful and shouldn't be promoted. So I find it hard to decide to help him... On the other hand: this is a software developer who asks help from what he thinks is one of the best people in the trade.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

This is more a personal opinion then a real advice. If I would be in this position which happens a lot of my time(most people in my country are believers) I would help him. I know its conflicting but it is also not good to create barriers we are at least all humans and should help each other out even when we do not agree with other people believes.

You can tell him that you do not believe in this stuff and even when he wants your help, then help him.

I had and have these experiences all of my life. As a atheist I take care for the sick and when I was working in Austria I had to take one patient to the church and be with him all the time. I accepted it as a work and to show that people can be even good without religion or some believes.

This is however my advice you can take it or leave it.

Wow, that's a tough one. Imagine if he were trying to develop a deadly weapon to sell to terrorists: Then it might be an easy refusal. But all he's doing is selling nonsense to people gullible enough to believe in it.

I don't know what I'd do. I might go the amoral route, and just help him.

Wait, I changed my mind. For a minute there, I forgot who I was!

The question to me is, which would I rather be known as:

1. A judgemental jerk.
2. An enabler of scammers.

I personally can live with being called the first thing, but it would eat away at me if I thought of myself as the latter.

I do, however, acknowledge the difficulty other people face when deciding such things.

I think you have to stand by your ideals. If you think it wouldn't be right, tell him so and politely say no. You might also refer him to someone else in the group willing to help him. There are always going to be people and situations like this in all walks of life.

You can either go along, refuse, or redirect.

Hope that helps.

First, without judgment you couldn't tell Hitler from Jesus.

Second, who would you rather be a "jerk" to, one guy or an unknown number of people that he's planning on bilking?

Finally, telling some guy that you can't in good conscience do the work isn't being a jerk, it's being honest.

I'm pretty sure they dressed differently.

You make a good point: I'd help him!

Finally, telling some guy that you can't in good conscience do the work isn't being a jerk, it's being honest.

Oh. Well, then I'd lie about it!

Don't people flip coins anymore to solve their moral issues?
