People who experience ''glitches'' and claim the universe is the Matrix

Postby Willywizz » Fri Dec 22, 2017 8:24 am

reddit.com/r/glitch_in_the_matrix

Some examples are;

''I slipped back in time''

''Time froze for 10 minutes and everything stood still''

''My friend teleported and we all saw it''

''My friend can breathe underwater''

''I went into another dimension for a moment''

''I saw a car/person/building vanish right in front of my eyes''

There's also examples of the 'Mandela Effect' being used to further their argument that the world is just a crappy videogame.

I can breathe underwater too, but then I die.

Anyone alse here ever read You're All Alone by Fritz Leiber?

Early example of the same genre as The Matrix, and more coherent.

If the universe is a simulation, what is it a simulation of?

A "real" universe? What about the universe in which the simulation is running?

Also a simulation? ;)

The idea that the Universe is a computer simulation is, in my mind, no more or less silly and/or stupid that the idea of God . . . and just as deserving of the same sympathetic (but skeptical) treatment.

I actually think this idea is a very old one.

Evidentally, in Hindu cosmology, the Universe is a dream by Bhrama, and the Universe disappears when He wakes up...as waking up ends the Great Cosmic Lotus Dream.

As to the question about what Universe the computer exists in that is simulating our Universe . . . .well, maybe...that is a simulation too.

And so on.

Like turtles, all the way down.

One thing I forgot to include:

I work in the medical field, and the matrix-like glitches should be taken seriously and investigated, not dismissed.

These glitches seem reminescent of certian forms of epilepsy...especially temporal lobe epliepsy, which should, of course, be looked into.

Also, the idea of people walking around thinking that the Universe is the matrix seems very similar to symptoms experienced by people who have very specific forms of brain damage. I do know that if people develop a leison in certian parts of the temporal lobes, they can become convinced that everyone around them is an imposter, and that their loved ones have been replaced--like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". This is called Capgras syndrome, and has a neurological basis.

This convicton that the Universe is a simulation seems, at least to me, to be a similar situation.

I remember someone telling me temporal lobe epilepsy can cause the appearance of time freezing to someone experiencing it. There's also a brain thing that's really rare but think of a game thats rendering at 1 fps.. i forget the name of it but pouring tea/coffee is nearly impossible for them to do since the part of the brain that processes motion is all messed up

Yeah - but it's the sneaky way horseshit manufacturers use Christmas as a gap into which dung can be inserted that gets me. I mean - there I was getting pleasantly dissolved and Kevin and (probably) his alter ego Willy snuck in and deposited piles of the stuff. You, Gawd, should be awarded the Galactic Skeptic Society Award for Standing Guard at Yuletide.
Well done, that man!.

The fact of the matter is poo - dle. Did you get that? We all manufacture horseshit the moment we open our mouths, even the blessed sages. The only difference between the sages and ye ordinary folk is that they know it and you do not.

I would say probably not, just a bit nutty when it comes to religion.

This "simulation" schtick is really a crazy religion for people who are too smart for regular crazy religions like Jehovah's Witnesses.

Here we go again. A simulation of what, gorgeous? You can't have a simulation unless there is something to simulate. What's the point in simulating a universe when there's already a universe to play in?

One bad movie and a gimmick to "tip off" the good guys. And then it's a religion. Stupid.

Definition of simulation: Acting out or mimicking an actual or probable real life condition, event, or situation --------Seth has said we exist in many dimensions simultaneously...that there are infinite probabilities we choose from...hiding our choices from ourselves to learn from them...---all the world's a stage and all the men and women are merely players...in roles we chose for ourselves.........

seth-------------Consider your present self as an actor in a play; hardly a new analogy, but a suitable one. The scene is set in the twentieth century. You create the props, the settings, the themes; in fact, you write, produce, and act in the entire production - you and every other individual who takes part.

You are so focused in your roles, however; so intrigued by the reality that you have created, so entranced by the problems, challenges, hopes, and sorrows of your particular roles that you have forgotten they are of your own creation. This intensely moving drama, with all its joys and tragedies, can be compared with your present life, your present environment, both individually and in masse.

But there are other plays that are going on simultaneously, in which you also have a part to play. These have their own scenery, their own props. They take place in different periods of time.

Occam's Razor...the simplest explanation is frequently the correct one. That a subset of the population experiences hallucinations, delusions, and perceptual errors is a proven fact. There are no factual data to support "the matrix."

Your turn. You postulate the existence of "the matrix," that is to say, that we are living in a simulation*. YOU must provide evidence to support YOUR claim.

* a simulation of what, exactly?

Seth said that? Wow! It all becomes clear to me now. I wrote a follow-up for you ... No, Honest, it really was me ....

They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

... in an earlier incarnation as William Shakespeare.

The embarrassing thing is the "Matrix" machines could have used cows, and they'd rule the Earth today. Unfortunately the Wachowskis needed humans in the movie for some reason.

Looks like one of my favorite "glitches in the Matrix" short story is finally public domain.

This etext was produced from Astounding Science Fiction, April 1948. Extensive research did not uncover any evidence that the copyright on this publication was renewed.

Also frequently anthologized (which is how I read in back in {mumble mumble} )
