If I were an alien who *could* contact us I wouldn't.

Why aliens would want to contact us is actually one of the better questions skeptics have to ask about UFOs.

These aliens would likely be as advanced in comparison to us as we are to ants. Would you stop during a walk in the park and try to communicate with ants?

Also, there is no need for aliens to come here! Any race advanced enough to make the trip would be advanced enough to manufacture anything we have here. People flatter themselves that we would hold some interest to a super-human race of space aliens. I don't see it.

There is no reason to assume that aliens must be hyper advanced, technologically or evolutionary.
Interstellar space travel is well within the grasp of humanity within the next 100years- but there aren't any convincing reasons for the massive resource expenditure required.
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Space travel, yes. FTL, not so sure.

I'd guess that if a specie were to discover FTL, it would at least destroy itself, possibly its universe, too.
FTL=travel back in time, so the first interstellar travellers to visit your planet would be your descendants from the future - which seriously can't end well.

Okay, so I used shorthand. How about "get to another planet around another star in less than forever"?

Nah. Better questions would be:

"Are you on drugs?"
"No, seriously, are you on drugs?"
"Can we have you tested?"

There's no real point to asking "Why would aliens want to contact you in the middle of nowhere?" The people who claim UFOs visit them will either claim not to know, will only guess, or will make stuff up.

Just saying that space travel doesn't require Star Trek levels of technology. We shouldn't expect aliens to necessarily be like Gods to us.

Without FTL they'd be as old as the gods by the time they got here.

Alternative hypotheses:

1) They are in contact with humans, but only a selected few individuals.

2) They are in contact with humans but not the dominant culture (because we suck).

3) They are in contact with the dominant species of Earth, and it's not humans.

The idea that aliens are in contact with only a select few humans is very intriguing:

after all, that's how spies have influenced foreign powers since time immemorial.

Especially if we are talking about a small scout force of aliens, selective contact would by far be the best approach to humanity.
But that could only work for a limited time.

They tried. For centuries, aliens have transmitted messages in our general direction and then listened really carefully for a response. Not a peep from us. They gave up in 1931.

well, if they give up that easily we are better off without them.
We need more stable and serious aliens in our relationship.
