Science v Intuition, V19 #3

Postby John Forester » Sat Sep 13, 2014 4:38 pm

Shtulman investigated the persistence of early intuition under later scientific knowledge. He asked for quick responses to certain statements that were of either type. Among these was: "statements that are scientifically false but intuitively true (e.g., fire is composed of matter ... ). Providing the correct classification for this statement is wrong, because it is true, whether it is looked at from the scientific or the intuitive point of view. Fire is the exothermic reaction between oxygen and some fuel, generally carbon containing material. Both oxygen and the fuel are materials, so that fire is composed of matter.

I wonder if this is merely a confusion between "fire" and "flame":

Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products.

A flame is a mixture of reacting gases and solids emitting visible, infrared, and sometimes ultraviolet light, the frequency spectrum of which depends on the chemical composition of the burning material and intermediate reaction products.

If so, seems more like a semantic argument to a layperson like myself, to whom "fire" and "flame" mean intuitively the same thing.

Well, electricity is composed of electrons.....they matter. :D

Intuition and our senses often 'fool' us. That's why we investigate things with science and the scientific method. Also one might consider whether is it important for the average person to know if fire is a substance, matter, energy, etc.
