Obesity virus

Post by Lance Kennedy » Wed Aug 15, 2018 9:33 pm

Reference, New Scientist, 28 July 2018, page 4

An Indian researcher in the 1980s found a virus, adenovirus 36, which when injected into chickens or monkeys caused them to put on weight. Since then, antibodies to that virus and virus particles themselves have been found in humans, and far more often in obese people than thin people. 30% of obese people had the virus compared to 5% of thin people. In a Petri dish, fat cells injected with the virus will store more fat.

This may be a new approach to controlling obesity. Perhaps a vaccine to control infection?

Here is a 2014 proof-of-concept abstract for a vaccine targetting this virus. So this has been known for some time. And another article indicating that trials are underway...

Thank you for the reference to trials. Very helpful.

Every time I've encountered this theory, it's been in a context where you'd get dumped on, laughed at, and called a lazy fatty if you even give the theory the time of day.

It appears that there is good data to support the idea. It may be time to dump our prejudices against obese people.

This fat virus concept has intrigued me for years, but I've never found any good information about it. I also wonder why nobody has been trying to make a treatment for it -- not necessarily a vaccine, but any kind of treatment, at all. I know that it doesn't affect all obese people, and that not everyone infected with it becomes obese, but still...you'd think something this profound would be a hot commodity. Not even the hucksters have leapt upon it, though.

They will now, Gord. What is the betting that within a year, some quack will offer an anti-viral anti-fat fake formula ?

But why have they waited until now? People have been talking about "obesity viruses" for years.

I would never sell that kind of candy, only rent it.
