HRT and breast cancer

About 12% of women get breast cancer some time in their lives. According to my latest New Scientist, long term hormone replacement therapy at menopause increases that by one extra case per thousand cases of breast cancer. I know that HRT provides enormous relief to women at that very difficult time. The risk appears to take the breast cancer statistics from 12% to 12.012% over the life time. Is that really something for women to be concerned about ?

A more nuanced analysis of HRT and women's health.

Breast cancer is not the only risk, but one of many.

HRT benefits outweigh the risks if:
- started at the time of menopause
- not long term, 3 - 5 years, max
- treatment is individualized to the patient, not a one-size-fits-all strategy.

Did anyone else hear about the new mammogram system? The subject lays on a table face down and the pertinent bits fit into holes in the table. No squishing needed. Japanese company, "from the folks who brought you Pearl Harbor."

Aw, that won't work for some Repugnicants. They want the ladies to take the whole drill, bit for bit, to their dentists.

I don't have the symptoms discussed in the article, but I notice that two of the benefits are germane to my health history. Both colorectal cancer and osteoporosis run in my family. Naturally, I get the dreaded colonoscopy every three years, and ensure my diet includes sufficient calcium and fiber, so I'll have to talk to my OB about the benefits of HRT as regards those conditions, and whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Thanks, Oleg!
