Science calls out Jeff Sessions

Postby Nikki Nyx » Mon Jun 19, 2017 10:56 pm

Amid a drug crisis that kills 91 people in the U.S. each day, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked Congress to help roll back protections that have shielded medical marijuana dispensaries from federal prosecutors since 2014, according to a letter made public this week. Those legal controls [sic] jeopardize the DoJ’s ability to combat the country’s “historic drug epidemic” and control dangerous drug traffickers, the attorney general wrote in the letter sent to lawmakers.

The catch, however, is that this epidemic is one of addiction and overdose deaths fueled by opioids—heroin, fentanyl and prescription painkillers—not marijuana. In fact, places where the U.S. has legalized medical marijuana have lower rates of opioid overdose deaths.

A review of the scientific literature indicates marijuana is far less addictive than prescription painkillers. A 2016 survey from University of Michigan researchers, published in the The Journal of Pain, found that chronic pain suffers who used cannabis reported a 64 percent drop in opioid use as well as fewer negative side effects and a better quality of life than they experienced under opioids. In a 2014 study reported in JAMA The Journal of the American Medical Association, the authors found that annual opioid overdose deaths were about 25 percent lower on average in states that allowed medical cannabis compared with those that did not.

Marijuana can be habit-forming, at least psychologically, but the risks are not in the same league as opioids. A 20-year epidemiological review of studies concluded that more than nine out of 10 people who try marijuana do not become dependent on the drug.

Also, unlike the case with opioids, it is virtually impossible to lethally overdose on marijuana—because a user would have to consume massive quantities in a prohibitively short time.*

Read the article here.

*Use of the word "virtually" is incorrect. It is physically impossible to overdose on cannabis, as it would require the consumption of 672 kilograms in a 15-minute period.
  • A standard edible dose is 10 milligrams. Overdosing via ingestion would require the consumption of 4,480,000 pieces of cannabis-infused chocolate per minute for 15 minutes straight (more than 74,666 per second). Even if you made your chocolates ten times as strong, it would still be physically impossible.
  • A half-gram bowl provides about five hits. Overdosing via smoking would require taking 448,000 hits per minute for 15 minutes straight (more than 7,466 per second). And that leave no time for cleaning your pipe out, packing a new bowl, or even lighting each one. Even if you are Deep Lung and can empty a half-gram bowl in one hit, it's still impossible.
Not to mention, at $300 for 28 grams, this exercise in futility would cost you $7.2 million USD. There are multitudinous cheaper ways to die stupidly.
What are the facts? Again and again and again-what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore divine revelation, forget what “the stars foretell,” avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable “verdict of history”--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your single clue. Get the facts!

Reason is not one of that one's many names. And his buddies in Congress are working hard to take away any help the suffering could get through their health insurance. But a priority is getting those government funded pricey private prisons filled and paid for with the money saved on healthcare...

MAN!!!! Just downright evil. When politicians are about making people's lives more miserable than they need be...... should revolution be far behind?

The Dem's need to get their sheep out to the polls and start NOW defeating the voting fraud committed each election by the Republicans. How many times in a row does the same thing have to happen?'

...............and aim for someone in their 50's. MediCare is for scrap booking, not running the country.

In my imagination, this entire comment is a Bloom County cartoon.

It's for the greater good, i.e. to make Sessions feel good.
What is the health and well-being of millions of Americans compared to that?
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.
