Water

I have been saying for a long time now that the advice to drink 8 glasses of water each day is total crap. Just drink when you are thirsty. The reference above shows I was right.

Was that advice a scam by the bottled water industry to sell more of their overpriced product?

Heard it long before the bottled water industry got off the group. In fact far enough back for me to doubt the science behind it.

I thought it was identified as crap just about as soon as it came out? I don't know about "health" but does the link cover drinking water before a meal...to fill you up? Somewhat related is not to drink too much with a meal or right after as it tends to flush food from the stomach causing stress down range. Both related issues seem reasonable to me. So I do what you say: drink when I'm thirsty and the other two.

Sante.

I searched around and found that a `standard glass` holds 250ml - so 8 glasses would be 2 liters. I know that I drink that or more, but I am very active and in the sun a bit. I assume that this newly discovered mechanism works for everyone - but if not (children, old age, ill, etc.) then the old guideline might still make sense.

I remember being told this as a child - way before bottled water was popular.

I assume you "mean" that your water requirement is 8 glasses per day............from all sources..... NOT that whatever else you are eating and drinking that you should have 8 separate or additional glasses of water?

FOR YEARS.....I drank nothing but coffee and milk. Not even a sip of water. Somehow............ I survived.

Oops.... a little target fixation there: OK............Beer and wine. I think I read at the time that beer was a diuretic and that you needed more water....and actually....I have always tried to drink a glass of water as my last act. Very few headaches that way.

Just a point, Bobbo.

Alcohol is a diuretic, but the degree to which an alcoholic drink dehydrates you depends on the concentration of alcohol. Spirits are very dehydrating. Wine less so. Beer actually hydrates, and quenches thirst, because the amount of alcohol is small compared to the amount of water.

thanks lance...I think that is my experience......except my perception is that I do feel better the next morning if I finish with a glass of water. That does leave room for various degrees of hydration?

I am reminded of what you hear on every show about alcohol/beer: it was the only source of clean disease free water in the Middle Ages and everyone drank weak beer from Morning to Night. THAT and my first visit to Europe after college where many picnics were bread cheese and wine. I think you would die on a bread and beer/water diet in the USA.... but could live long and happy if bored on "real" bread....and beer/water. I would prefer wine....but I'm not a member of the aristocracy.

If you get a hangover from beer, it is not due to dehydration. The alcohol in beer is perfectly able to make you as sick as a dog all by itself.

The old saw might still be useful for people planning trips where drinkable water isn`t plentiful.

Yeah, but it was watered-down wine. I know this for a fact from a future life.

I used to drink 8 glasses of water daily thinking I will vanish away by dehydration. But this article has helped me a lot.

To the best of my knowledge, this claim originates in 1945 when the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council recommended a consumption of 2.5 L of water per day but noted at that time that most people would ingest the majority of that water in the food they were eating.

But not as quick as the higher alcohol content of wine. ;)
