Re: Opinions on Nooalf
All dyslexics shoud join the Nooalf Revolution. Aside from being a nonstoopid spelling system, its a war agenst institutionalized stupidity.
Wen anybody can speak up and say 'hey! This iz stupid!' and evrybody sez 'ye! youre rite!' and then thingz actually chanje, we can declare victory.

Thanks. I had the impression that sanskrit wuz a spelling system for a languaj uv the ancient world. Apparently, it iz the name for the languaj and it had no ritten form.

Sure, as most of our human animal relatives do, one likes some attention. Some.
And also: you're doing it all wrong. Don't you know blue energy inhibits? Ask your chakras, they'll tell ya.

Why do you say it has no written form?

I didnt.
Further down in the Wiki articl:
Sanskrit originated in an oral society, and the oral tradition was maintained through the development of early classical Sanskrit literature.[67] Writing was not introduced to India until after Sanskrit had evolved into the Prakrits; when it was written, the choice of writing system was influenced by the regional scripts of the scribes. Therefore, Sanskrit has no native script of its own.[2] As such, virtually all the major writing systems of South Asia have been used for the production of Sanskrit manuscripts.
The earliest known inscriptions in Sanskrit date to the mid second century AD

Re: Opinions on Nooalf
Occasionally, I Google 'nooalf' to see if there are any new mentionz uv it anywhere. Today it got 1860 rezults, about the same az its been for yirz. Kinda odd, but it wuz sumwhere over 10,000 for several yirz, then went down around 2012.
Wut its alwayz needed wuz sum media coveraj. Just a mention on even a local newz show woud at least boost the site vizitorz for a wile, maybe even make it go viral.
If you Google it for 'news' you will find that its virtually not there. The 4 rezults I got today are all my comments on sum articlez. This iz in spite uv my attempts to bring it to the attention uv all sorts uv newz organizationz and educational and literasy trade publicationz.
I hezitate to consider the possibility that its being actively suppressed on a global level, but this looks like evidens for that.
If its true, then wy?
--------------------
Ran across this https://www.headsprout.com/ in a comment about my comment in a literacy related article. Its only 200$ for a 1 year lisens! Or, if you hav a skool and order it for 10 classroomz, only 170$ each!!! Such a bargin!

JO, I agree the written English language could use a bit of a dust-off. Weber tried with his Americanisation, mostly just because he was a racist {!#%@} that hated the French. But he totally {!#%@} up. Aloominum? Really? But Frankly (hehe), your system is even worse. And I know you're really just playing your character. Bit of RP is fun.

America sees the absurdities—she sees the kingdoms of Europe, disturbed by wrangling sectaries, or their commerce, population and improvements of every kind cramped and retarded, because the human mind like the body is fettered 'and bound fast by the chords of policy and superstition': She laughs at their folly and shuns their errors: She founds her empire upon the idea of universal toleration: She admits all religions into her bosom; She secures the sacred rights of every individual; and (astonishing absurdity to Europeans!) she sees a thousand discordant opinions live in the strictest harmony ... it will finally raise her to a pitch of greatness and lustre, before which the glory of ancient Greece and Rome shall dwindle to a point, and the splendor of modern Empires fade into obscurity.

Re: Opinions on Nooalf
Occasionally, I giv old versionz uv the SMC to parents at storez with kidz, explaining that it will keep them amuzed while shopping. They are alwayz happy to aksept them, anything that mite keep the brats frum running around.
Gave 3 to a mom yesterday and her toddlerz got into them immediately. I wuz in to next ile and herd them cheerfully calling out the letterz & picturez. Great! At the rate they were going, theyd no Nooalf befor they left the store.
BUT THEN!
A few minits later, wile standing at the checkout, I hear the boy say "K. KaT" and the mom sez "no no no! Its C. Cat"
I coudnt hear any more befor I left the store.
Its a good exampl uv tranzjenerational inertia. Hopefully, she had time later to examin the chart more closely and saw the regular english tranzlationz, realized her kidz were picking it up at a pase thats completely impossibl with old fashioned literasy training, and didnt toss them in the trash.

I have to jump to JO's defence here, zeuzzz. He has the roolz sorted out exhaustively and he's done a great deal of work on Nooalf (see the Nooalf site but wear sunglasses). Incidentally, JO doesn't post in full-blown Nooalf - it's a hybrid English/Nooalf to get you used to the idea before he blasts you with the real thing.

As a mathematician, I cannot support anything that compromises clarity. Clarity is enhanced by standardization of basic formats: grammar, spelling, punctuation. Local pronunciations should not affect how any word is spelled. In fact, I would be in favor of doing away w/differences in spelling between British and American English: choose one - perhaps the flip of a coin - and stick to it ... Well, since most of the World prefers British spelling, perhaps it would be better to go w/that.

Re: Opinions on Nooalf
JO 753 wrote:So it duznt bug you that kidz spend 10x more time memorizng spelling than learning math?
Hardly true. It takes longer to learn Euclidean geometry than it takes to learn how to spell an adequate number of words to be a proficient speller. Learning how to spell disciplines the mind for other learning. And it teaches one to conform to standardized presentation formats - essential to mathematics. Mathematicians study grammar, you know. It's an essential part of pure mathematics. Mathematics is a language with its own grammar and syntax and its own strict rules of presentation. The beauty of mathematics is that mathematicians need not speak the same language to understand one another - and that is a beautiful thing!

Re: Opinions on Nooalf
Grammar skool kidz are not learning Euclidian geometry partly kuz they are spending so much time lerning to read & rite.
Woud you be a proponent uv standardized mathematics if the standard wuz stoopid? For example 1 x 1 = 2 kuz sumwun in the 12th sentury didnt think its rite that the more powerful multiplication function shoud produse a lower number than addition duz with the same numberz. Its the standard! Get over it! No problem az long az everybody goez by it!

But yours is not standard spelling. It's phonetic spelling of some sort. True - it could be made standard - but what would that accomplish that has not already been accomplished w/the established standard spelling? In time, as pronunciation changes, what then? No spelling - no written language - ever completely accurately reflects the spoken language. You're the one who needs to get over it.

Not wasting everybodyz time iz a good start.
Then therez the increased functionality - it can spell dialects, aksents and other languajez.
And wut I consider to be the most important aspect - it promotes lojik and thinking insted uv mindless tradition and authority worship.

Re: Opinions on Nooalf
People speaking dialects often have trouble understanding one another - writing in dialectal phonetics would lead to a state of complete confusion. That was why the standardized spelling was developed in the first place. Dialectal phonetic spelling was driving people crazy. Everyone spelled as he pleased - half the time, nobody knew what anyone was writing.
