Get more education and live longer.

Postby Lance Kennedy » Fri May 04, 2018 7:41 pm

Reference : New Scientist, 28 April 2018, page 12

It has long been known that more wealth and more education correlates with longer life and better health. It was believed that more money and knowledge meant people looked after themselves better. But recent data suggests that it is the education that matters. More education correlates with more money, and it is the education, not the wealth, that matters. For example, upturns in the economy do not result in people living longer, even though that means they are wealthier.

In third world nations, average life span correlates nicely with literacy, and teaching more people to read and write correlates with a rise in average life span. In the developed nations, those people with tertiary qualifications live longer. Education's predicts life span better than wealth.

Does this mean that it is better to spend money on schools than hospitals ?

Your question presupposes that a longer life is beneficial. The rightists might prefer that people live shorter lives so as not to burden their own wealth thru taxes for education, healthcare, and especially programs for the aged.

Upturns in the economy are short lived, uch too short to affect lifespan. Secondly, anpturn in the economy does not mean that people below the poverty line suddenly have access to more wealth. Upturns tend to pass them by entirely. The example doesn't refute anything.

Please show me the third world country where an increase in literacy opportunities did not also feature increases in access to better nutrition and health care.

Oleg

Some economic upturns last decades, easily enough to affect life span. I assume this is what the researchers were referring to.

Certainly educational improvements lead to other improvements. Part of the whole picture.

But the principle applies both to individuals and societies. Individuals who are more educated live longer.

Interesting cause and effect vs concomitant precursors. You have to have a certain wealth to have education and healthcare, medicine and public health? Otherwise, you just die earlier than you should with some knowledge as to why.

As usual: a mix of things.

Bobbo

While that is true, the researchers in this case said education by itself is a major contributor to longer life span.

Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe better health allows people to get a better education.

Doubt it, Oleg. Not applicable in third world countries where new schools extend life span.

Without proper nutrition, brain development can be impaired.

Education's predicts life span better than wealth. /// Thats interesting because it actually doesn't lock down the importance or role of wealth or the other factors. As said...lots of interacting variables of different sorts. To me: you can't have education without some wealth so how can the correlation be so?.......so its all definitional.....meaning you can design a study to get about any result you want.

How did they factor in raw intelligence?

I doubt any kind of linear correlation: without depended nutrition during pregnancy and growing up, brains don't develop enough to make full use of whatever education is available.

Made me laugh. Any two variables have a linear correlation. Add a third, and ...........no more.

The power of words.

...............and JUST NOW........I pulled up the word I was looking for above when I said other factors.....its regression analysis which is what applies with 3 or more variables. Some work quite easily and understandably....but many are just argumentative. My favorite: murder rate goes down and everyone has their favorite linear correlation....but the truth is always multi-factorial....with the strongest correlation often being the average age of the population.....IF they aren't in a civil war..........IF there isn't some other general civil unreast........or IF..... there isn't an entirely corrupt gubment ...........or..........etc.

On murder rate.
Trump raves about knife murders in the UK, suggesting American style high gun ownership will stop it.

He fails to mention that the USA has 5.5 murders per 100,000 people per year (mostly with guns) and the UK murder rate is only 1.

Yeah, but if the murder rate by knives is lower in the US than it is in the UK, then maybe all the guns are keeping it down. ;)

True.

What evil bastard wants to carry a knife when he can carry a gun ?

However, I suspect that in the US - those who carry a gun, also carry a knife. Here in Japan, guns and knives are illegal for self defense, and a knife with a blade over approx one and a half inches is illegal to carry. Our deaths by knife rate being about 0.3 per 100,000.

Japan is the classic proof of the idea that restricting weapons reduces violence.
All nations should follow that example.
