"A Greater Survival Threat Than Asteroids"

Postby bobbo_the_Pragmatist » Tue Aug 22, 2017 12:43 am

I already knew about Yellowstone....although forgot the clock was ticking right now. I went to the link to find out about the other 19 hot spots. Guess I'll just have to wait until they blow????

On point....I don't see why not to drill and get the geothermal power from it. The doomsday scenario becomes almost irrelevant? Only Big Nuke and Fossil Fuel could be against it.

You don't think smoke can rise up into outer space? Dang. I did think it just "looked nice." I also find it kinda hard to believe an ash covering Nebraska 10 feet deep...... thats a lot of ash.

In Iceland, the city of Rekyevik (I'm probably spelling it wrong) is powered by geothermal energy from vulcanism.

There was a big push for room temperature superconductors...in part because superconducting power cables could carry energy from the American west to the power-hungry east coast cities.

If super-conducting power cables ever become a reality, there will be no need for coal, little need for nuclear, and global warming would be drastically reduced.

KL--the American West does not have a surplus of power "at all." Are you jumping the gun on something?

.........but speaking of coastal differences.........its way too bad its not easier to move water what with the "East" just letting it run into the Ocean. Maybe when tunnel boring machines are nuclear powered the cost could come down?

Here they all are, with a bit of description of each.

There's a colossal one forming near Samoa. It won't be ripe for 100,000,000 years. I can hardly wait.

Oleg: great link. Thanks. Exactly what I was hoping to read.

Reykjavik... not on the list. Too stable?.... more like Kileau (sp) in Hawaii?

Iceland is on the mid-Atlantic ridge, not a supervolcanic hotspot.

Did you google that, or somehow remember it?

Can you confirm? The general rule in pronouncing Hawaiian is to accent each vowel?.... or to pronounce each consonant with its following one vowel and then each individual vowel thereafter??? I think I read that on my Breakfast Napkin before having an excellent "Panelo Breakfast" (pa-ne-lo as per the rule...rice and eggs. Or was it Panelaeo? I was too hungry to remember...but I prepare this meal at home and remember the waves)
