'Karakoram Anomaly' Solved

Postby Nikki Nyx » Tue Aug 08, 2017 7:53 pm

A summer 'vortex' of cold air over the Karakoram mountain range is causing the glaciers in the region to grow in spite of global warming, scientists have shown.

Publishing their findings today in Nature Climate Change, the team from Newcastle University, UK, have identified a large scale circulation system -- or vortex -- centred over the Karakoram, a large mountain range spanning the borders of Pakistan, India, and China.

In winter, the vortex affects the temperature over the whole 2,000 kilometre mountain range, but in the summer the vortex contracts and has an effect only over the Karakoram and western Pamir.

This induces an anomalous cooling in summer which is different to the warming seen over the rest of the Himalaya.

Co-author Professor Hayley Fowler, says this Karakoram vortex goes some way to explaining why the glaciers in this region are behaving differently to those in most other parts of the world.

"While most glaciers are retreating as a result of global warming, the glaciers of the Karakoram range in South Asia are stable or even growing," explains Professor Fowler, Professor of Climate Change Impacts at Newcastle University. LINK

Sounds like the Polar Votex that has started vexing North America the past few years? The temp difference is lesser now which allows North Pole Air to descend farther South bringing blizzard and many People Magazine Readers to think its Global Freezing rather than warming. The key is...while New York State is getting extra cold..........Alaska is getting even extra warm...... with the net/net being..... "its warmer."

I assume the same for India................but don't care one way or the other. Local conditions say nothing about GLOBAL anything else.

Those glaciers might become icicles in the next few years...

We froze our butts off for a couple winters in NE—it was colder here than Alaska!—and cringed every time we heard the term "polar vortex." But we've also had off-season strings of days where it was hotter here than it was in Miami and Phoenix. The past few years, our new pattern of weather appears to be a few days of clement weather followed by either a violent storm or several days of heavy rain or snow.
