Pictures of Skeda Beach Massacre of Liepāja Jews December 15th, 1941

Postby Jeffk 1970 » Sun Dec 24, 2017 12:14 am

Sequence of pictures:

First, a group women sitting and standing. You can see yellow stars on their clothing. The men guarding them are Latvian Police officers but in the very far right you can see a German staff car, Germans supervised the killings.

Spoiler used due to nudity:

This is a picture of the Epstein family:

Image

The patriarch, Haim Epstein, did not die with his family. He died in a Soviet Gulag after the Soviets arrested him after the Soviets occupied the Baltics. Mr. Epstein was the president of a bank. He died about four months after his family and as far is known, never knew their fate.

A picture of a group of children and some women, led by a boy in a dark shirt. The picture shows his grimace, he knew his and the other children’s fate:

Image

There is a little girl behind him, being helped by her mother (the assumption is this is her mother). Behind them is a woman with a baby resting on her shoulder. Apparently what they saw is this next picture:

Image

This is a group of women lined up to be shot. They are not nude, apparently this indignity was reserved for young women. One of the women is leaning on the the other next to her, another has her hand resting on the shoulder of the woman next to her. They died looking at the ocean.

This is the execution of the group with the boy in the dark shirt:

Image

You see a man in the far right pushing bodies down into the pit with his rifle. The pit is full of bodies.

The group is shot and falls into the pit, the man with the rifle moves toward them to push them down:

Image

The killers used the dark flag to show the victims where to stand.

Finally:

Image

Left to right: (1) Sorella Epstein; (2) presumably Rosa Epstein, her mother; (3) unknown; (4) Mia Epstein; (5) unknown. Alternate identification makes Mia Epstein (5) instead of (4), and (2) Pauline Goldman.

The pictures are from this website:

I pulled the picture of the group led by the boy in a dark shirt during a search, the above site lacked this picture:

https://www.google.com/search?q=1941+the+massacre+at+skede+beach+pictures&client=safari&hl=en-us&prmd=ivmn&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&fir=X2rpSx9UCsKitM%253A%252CVpnLUU4j6ls4sM%252C_%253BMrAkQuLA8G8FXM%253A%252CjmWlj2KNK-1jiM%252C_%253Bks61g0ox1HS4CM%253A%252CjmWlj2KNK-1jiM%252C_%253BS9zarVuRWAaT5M%253A%252CjmWlj2KNK-1jiM%252C_%253BLjF5KbR-nCN-RM%253A%252C7HCYsxIr-aGeSM%252C_%253B8XZlH2vVfrqABM%253A%252CVpnLUU4j6ls4sM%252C_%253Bv5fQA7NMC7rWYM%253A%252C7HCYsxIr-aGeSM%252C_%253BOg6VxxPXJr-boM%253A%252CSl1snT01Kf0zCM%252C_&usg=__CfG93Yg-_2f0_Jhtx3fUMlgGdOw%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiy9rDooaHYAhWLg1QKHeVUC_UQ7AkIOQ&biw=414&bih=622

I pulled the sequence from the documentary called:
The Nazi Death Squads, the Einsatzgruppen

This is a translated version shown on Amazon Prime Video.

Edited to clarify title of post.

Some background:

Per the documentary, a Jewish electrician working for the SS found the pictures in an SS man’s room. He arranged to have the pictures copied, took the pictures, copied them and then returned them. After the war he provided them to the Soviets who used them in subsequent trials.

Subject of one of the best/worst Rodoh 1.0 threads. Also discussed in this sub forum I believe in the Einsatzgruppen thread. I think that the Jewish laborer who found the photos was named David Zivcon. Part two of the HC piece (2nd HC link above) relates to shootings in August, not the massacre in the photos in the OP.

. . . I mean Negative Capability, that is, when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason—Coleridge, for instance, would let go by a fine isolated verisimilitude caught from the Penetralium of mystery, from being incapable of remaining content with half-knowledge. - John Keats, 1817

Thanks, one of the HC links has the name of the SS officer and his sentence from his trial.

Carl Strott IIRC (I think there’s some controversy via Ezergailis) about which officer actually took the photos.

It was Carl-Emil Strott.

I forgot the Emil!!

Here’s earlier mention with links to two articles, one about the August shooting and one about the December massacre: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=25822&p=518652&hilit=Liepaja#p518578 (edit: first link to YV seems to be dead; IIRC it was an Ezergailis article; I am pretty sure I have a pdf of it)

Yes, I remember that. I wanted to get all those pictures sequenced right, the documentary I’m watching on the Einsatzgruppen gave the sequence and the backstory.

Good idea indeed. I found the reference in Ezergailis' article, he says that another officer, Erich Handke of EK2, shot the photographs along with Strott. They used a Minox camera.

True, should have clarified that.
