Probably to keep the bodies away from scavengers....and why would there be evidence of fire?

The cave was totally dark for most of the trip. They had to find their way in, evaluate the last drop as being a good place to put bodies, and then get back out again. If they could do that by feel alone I'd be very impressed. I imagine someone will give us a theory on that eventually. Many Ph.D.s lying in that cave right now.

I assume they did use fire to light their way.....and that there would be no evidence of such use.

They say theze guyz are from 1,000,000 or more yirz ago. iznt that before fire wuz harnessed? And also, that their brains are only a little bigger than a chimp's.

And I'd expect the upper areaz to be black with soot if they used fire.

It's an interesting subject. They do have some theories, although they are quite astounding:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_naledi

The researchers claim "these individuals were capable of ritual behaviour".[31] The article's authors speculate that the placing of dead bodies in the cave was a ritualistic behaviour, a sign of symbolic thought.[32] "Ritual" here means an intentional and repeated practice (disposing of dead bodies in the cave), and not implying any type of religious ritual.[25] Ritualistic behavior has been generally considered to have emerged among Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis.[2] The oldest confirmed Neanderthal burial is 100,000 years ago.[27]

Berger thinks that deliberate disposal of bodies within the intricate cave system would have required the species members to find their way through total darkness and back again, and he speculates that this would have required light in the form of torches or fires lit at intervals

But,

Potts describes it as more of a mystery: “There is no evidence of material culture, like tools, or any evidence any kind of symbolic ritual that we almost always associated with burial," he says. "These bodies seem to have simply been dropped down a hole and disposed of, and that really brings up a whodunit,” according to smithsonian.com.[30]

I was wondering if the cave was ever more open. Could there have been a now-collapsed passage that once led into it?

I don't get deep underground as much as I should....

If so that would solve the lighting problem. Maybe there was a "sky light" opening in the next to the last chamber that covered over and filled in by time, weather, and erosion? We'd find signs of direct sunlight in the layers of stone in the cave.

All I can remember from my geology courses right now is that Hawaiian lava is called "aa" because it's sharp and that's the sound people make when they walk on it in their bare feet.

Well, that and the fact that "igneous metamorphic sedimentary" are not magic spell words that will cause a bureaucrat to burst into flames, although you'd think they should be.

I'm highly doubting fire use at that level of hominid. There could have been some plant with bioluminescence?

Are we still talking about bureaucrats bursting into flames?

Maybe they're the bodies of those who tried to get to the back of the caves without lights and couldn't find their way out again.

Berger says it's a cemetery population, meaning mostly young and old, no middle aged. That's not the demographic I'd pick for spelunking.

I heard something vaguely similar elsewhere, so I took it on face value.
