STOP THE PRESSES! Psychology not a science after all.

Postby Abdul Alhazred » Fri Oct 27, 2017 1:14 pm

They still have presses, right? :notsure:

Or to be more precise, about to part company with science officially, as anthropology already has.

At least that's my prediction. Expect to hear more of this and not just from me here.

Cultural Change Over Time: Why Replicability Should Not Be the Gold Standard in Psychological Science
Perspectives on Psychological Science

Abstract

By continuing to focus on the necessity for replication, psychological science misses an important and all-pervasive psychological phenomenon: the impact of social and cultural change on behavior. Or put otherwise, our discipline misinterprets failure to replicate behavioral results if we do not consider that social and cultural change can produce systematic shifts in behavior. Data on the connection between social change and behavioral change point to a new role for “replication”: not to show that results can be duplicated, but to reveal behavioral effects of sociodemographic and cultural change in the intervening years between original and replicated procedure, whether those be surveys, standardized behavioral procedures, or intelligence tests.

I'll be sure to tell my wife she's not a scientist when I get home tonight. I'm sure that will go over well.

I forget now.......were the Psych classes I took in the Science Building.........or the Humanities Building???? I think the latter....but: LABELS DON'T CONTROL. You learn that in science and humanities. In physics or psychology.

Replicability is a problem in psychology, that is true, but not because it is "not a science", but because the human mind is such a complex and varied thing. That doesn't mean an entire scientific inquiry should just start publishing any baloney, it just means they are due for a new paradigm (God knows they've had a few).

Psychology is the study of the human mind, and I think ey will eventually merge or be absorbed by neuroscience, once neuroscience begins to understand how the brain represents the mental a little more. Currently the two fields have enough space between that they can remain separate, but they cannot stay that way forever. They need to find a way to bridge the gap between their two fields.

Sounds plausible, I might even have bought it at one time.

But it seems the field, or at least some significant fraction of it, is moving away from all this "science" {!#%@}.

Clarification of my OP:

I'm not saying psychology could not in principle be a science, just that it isn't and I expect we are headed for an official announcement of same.

Previously, I thought of psychology as being a proto-science like alchemy that was eventually headed for sciencehood.

I recently listened tothis podcast, which goes into the problems psychology is facing from a statistics perspective, and the ways in which statistics can be used to incorrectly validate ones results. Not to mention the fact that usually only positive results are published in Journals, which negative results tend to not, which is an issue.

It's probably due for a shake up in the field. As to what that means, I couldn't say.

One promising area is "Internet Psychology." People want to know what people want to see.

Not a science, but a perfectly valid form of market research. ;)

More likely his proctologist.

If "Internet Psychology" is a science, Donald Trump is a scientist.
