Religion creates poverty ?

Postby Lance Kennedy » Thu Aug 16, 2018 5:15 am

Reference, New Scientist, 28 July 2018, page 24

According to the reference above, there is not a single example of a modern democracy that is highly religious and highly successful. Apart from places with exceptional natural resources like oil (for example, Saudi Arabia), being religious appears to make the state poorer.

It appears that being religious makes a place less prosperous. For example, China and India are comparable in many ways, but less religious China has been outperforming more religious India economically over the past few decades. Inside the USA, less religious states are more prosperous than more.

The question is whether religion is the victim of prosperity, or the cause of poverty ?

One possibility is that the greater freedoms of secularity also drive economic development ?

That's weird. I've always thought poverty helped to push people toward religion, rather than the other way around.

That is possible, Gord. The article I referenced did not take that view point, but it might still be correct.

Religions `tax` their believers and provide little, if any, economic benefit in return. Some provide medical services, counselling, even charity relief for the destitute, but all consume most of that tax for their own upkeep and growth at best, and in some cases take most for personal gain. It seems to me that religiosity often contributes to poverty, at least for those less well off.

True, TJ.

Just take a look at the multi billion dollar church buildings around the world. Useless for anything related to human welfare, and built by gauging the poor.
