When Gerald Mayo tried to sue Satan

Post by Gord » Mon Jan 22, 2018 7:12 am

Remember the good ol' days? Say, 1971 for instance?

United States ex rel. Gerald Mayo v. Satan and His Staff, 54 F.R.D. 282 (W.D.Pa. 1971), was a federal court case in which a prisoner filed a lawsuit against Satan and his servants in United States District Court. It was dismissed on procedural grounds.

The suit was dismissed because Gerald Mayo could not think of a way for the US marshal to serve Satan the proper forms. But there were other problems, such as:

- as a prince, there were possible jurisdictional questions
- as a class action suit, Gerald Mayo might not be able to represent all the people within the class
