Well all I can do is wish a Happy 25th of December. As an atheist, how can I possibly wish you a happy christmas? Well christmas means "Christ's Mass", so if I don't believe in christ, just how do I say "Merry Christmas"?

Anyway, enough of the BS. Hope y'all have a great holiday, and y'all be back next year stirring the sh*t out of each other. :slapfight:

You didn't get the memo?
It's ok for atheists to say 'Merry Christmas' as studies have shown that around this time of year it's the christians who are pathetic, miserable {!#%@} because of a perceived war on their stupid fairy tales.
Say it loud

Happy holidays, all y'all!

I baked a figgy pudding this year. It smells wonderful. I wasn't expecting that, I thought it was supposed to be utterly disgusting.

Ever notice how much 'Merry Christmas' sounds like 'Merry Kissmyass"?

Well Gord, whatever. I went to a catholic school and their version was as I stated. But you can't believe anything they tell you, so perhaps it means something different.

Well, anyone can think what they like ... ... but the accepted derivation is Latin 'missa' (meaning a delivery or arrival). Unfortunately, missa is a feminine form so, unless Jesus was really a woman, the festival may be celebrating the arrival of someone entirely different.
As far as I'm concerned, it means "have a good time, eat silly things and get pleasantly pissed", which would be about right as December 25th is a straight theft from the Roman Saturnalia, when people did exactly that. It's simply a festival in the depths of winter, when people (especially in northern Europe) really needed something to brighten their lives.

Ya know Poodle, what you are saying is probably so close to the truth that ordinary people would be horrified. Guess I'm saying, WE are not normal people. And that's because we tend to think about things in more depth than the average Joe.

But you're right when you speak of Saturnalia. The christian religions seem to have a habit of pinching pagan festivals and making them their own. Correct me if I'm wrong, but easter is another example, and I believe it has to do with a pagan fertility celebration. Seems hard to believe that so called christians would use such an event as their own. But then again it would seem that christians are guilty of far more than that.

And for the record Poodle, my definition of christmas was provided by the catholic religion in which I grew up. Very simple I guess. "Christ...mas". Anyway mate, it is all a load of bull.

You're right about pinching festivals (or as right as it's possible to be). Easter - from the goddess Eostre - festival is March/April somewhere and, as she's also a goddess of the dawn, she appears to represent 'returnings'. That's the return of the light as a dawn goddess and the return of life (green shoots, young animals) as a spring goddess. Hardly surprising, therefore, that the RC church decided to steal that festival and put their own twist on it. It doesn't take too much searching to find a pre-christian festival behind most (if not all) early christian special days. And there are quite a few calendric constructions around Europe to help in timings - Stonehenge being probably the prime example. Note - the common solar alignments in such things work both ways - and it was midwinter which was much more important than midsummer. Catching midwinter starts a simple day count up to seed-planting time. Midsummer tells you sod all.
