Killing Hope by William Blum

Postby Tom Palven » Fri Dec 16, 2016 4:24 pm

Am reading Killing Hope: US Military and Cia Intervention Since WW II which Noam Chomsky said is "far and away the best book on this topic."
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/17836 ... pldnSite=1

This book is very readable. It is 471 pages long, but almost reads like a novel.

It is not for anyone who wants to retain a belief that the US is the world's great benefactor.

But Tom, anyone who wants to retain a belief that the US is the world's great benefactor is unlikely to take Noam Chomsky's word for anything at all.
And anyone who is looking for corroboration of long held convictions will find 471 pages, much to short.

I too think that " Killing Hope.." is both readable and convincing, but I want to put in a word for another of his books, one from 2004 that has been on my mind often in the past two weeks, every time one of the horrendous images from Aleppo appears on my TV screen or in print:

"Freeing the World to Death: Essays on the American Empire"

Regretfully, morosely, sadly, ...resignedly ... almost every word of it is true.

You just know that CIA will pull every money wrench, carrot, and stick it has out of its ass to prevent a thaw in North and South Korea relations.

TP: thanks for the call out. I wasn't going to say anything until.

I don't know what you think I will say on the subject...........but what comes to mind is: "Who knows?" If you/I have no position/goal we want to advocate, what does disinterested analysis tell us? And what it always tells me is: "Who knows." No history tells you what will happen tomorrow. Only what could happen. Add what could happen with all the four types of unknowns we have, and what you add up to is: "Who knows."

You know?

I almost posted in the Halocuast Deniers thread about Trump's craziness resulting in a thaw between NK and SK but decided it was too unknowable so I deleted my one sentence composed. History is going to happen, no matter who is playing.

I'll take a stab at the direct question: From Confessions of an Economic Hit Man to the Neo Con desire for more war everywhere, I don't know what "the interests" of the CIA are. I would assume No Nukes For You re NK.....and that total peace arrived at bilaterally between NK and SK would leave NK with Nukes?

I agree with the long held USA position of No Nukes for You........and am dismayed at the depth of "sentimentality" in the analysis of the threat to world peace/humanity represented by NK Nukes. We either take control of our destiny and prevent NK from having reliable intercontinental ballistic force (as they are already a Nuke Power) or.....we let the rest of the world fail to address their destiny as well. Its always a guess, but seems to me preventing NK from having ICBM's "even if we go to WAR now" presents less threat than allowing NK to develop that tech as they will.......over time allowing them to threat the destruction of much more than they are threatening now.

aka: taking world/military leaders at their word.......no matter how stupid and self destructive it is. I usually say just look, but now, its just listen...........or better: read. When a crazy hits you in the mouth after yelling that is what he is going to do...........I don't blame the crazy.

Mind the gap.
