Conservative and good looking.

Postby Lance Kennedy » Sat Feb 24, 2018 12:48 am

A recent article in the Journal of Public Economics reports that good looking people are more likely to be conservative. This is suggested to be because they have been 'spoiled' all their life and cannot understand what it is like to be underprivileged. A bit like the reason wealthy tend to be conservative. Good looking people who go into politics also tend to be conservative. Beauty = selfishness ?

Well, that can't be true. I am an Adonis myself, and as far left as you can get and still be allowed to drive. (Sarc-off).

But, it is difficult growing up attractive, intelligent, skilled, rich. Hard to believe that other people are not failures because they just didn't apply themselves...... and that is for the Honest ones. Lots of exceptions, but I think the general tendency is valid. But that is all it is. The ugly people should deal with that reality and start voting their own best interests. So...regardless of how much truth is in the observation, it really is mostly irrelevant.

Like all people with some kind of privilege (power, money, looks, intelligence, education) it takes a lot of self-reflection to realize that you do have an advantage over others.

Tj: if that is a clever and subtle dig at me........I tried to correct it but at the time this website was taking 5 minutes to accept any input from me, so I didn't know what was happening. Its all OK now but the system won't let me delete a duplicate now because someone has responded to it. No doubt, a rule that works well most of the time..........

You should know by now that every Adonis, pretend or otherwise, is very sensitive to any criticism..................... back at ya.

There are plenty of exceptions to the rule. I do not think I have the expertise to state the generalisation as correct or otherwise, which is why I quoted the article. For what it's worth (probably not much) it makes logical sense to me. When I think of conservatives who rose high on the basis of good looks and no brains, I think of Sarah Palin. If Trump were better looking, he would be another example.

It wasn`t initially intentional - as I got caught by the same mechanism that got you - impatience with the wait, and hitting submit again. But once mine was there - it was too good to simply delete, so I added mr green. So don`t worry - when I think you are spewing BS I will say so directly, as I have in the past. ;)

Sarah Palin - no brains for sure, but not good looks IMO.

I do not think there is any doubt that being good looking very substantially increases the number of votes a politician gets. Sarah Palin is in her mid 50's, and her young and sexy era is over, but she remains a very handsome looking woman. I can think of no other reason why anyone would vote for someone so ditzy.

Of course, very few voters use their brains in deciding who they vote for. Mostly it is what I call "warm fuzzies". That is, they vote for whoever tickles their emotions in a warm and comfortable way. A politician can win votes by being good looking, or by smiling a lot, or by saying all the right things in terms of human emotion, like promising to make everyone wealthy when that is physically impossible. A man or woman who is a genius level statesperson will never be voted in if he or she cannot tap into the voters blind and idiotic emotions.

Donald Trump made good use of this by making large numbers of idiotic promises.

I think of that VP candidate who could not spell potato. but this does remind me of a vp (in business) I had worked with who had applied for a job at my current employment. The CEO asked me what I thought of the guy and I said "He looks good in a suit." The CEO looked a bit disappointed "AT ME" but the guy was not hired. I have always thought I took one for the team.

Good looking. No reason not to hire the lookers if they are at all competent to do the job. Work is only about 80% of what takes place in most working environments. The 20% needs attention too.
