I realise that the topic of this thread is no longer about this thread's topic, but perhaps the issue is related the the forum code not counting deleted or ignored posts when working out where to jump to? I just did a thanks to Nikki in the whatcha listenin to thread and after clicking it took me to several pages back in the thread instead of the entry I thanked.

That is very likely. What it does is to set a URL that is linked to an "ID." Each post has a number and an identical ID.
For example, Gawd's post above has this URL, with ID anchor:
Code: Select all
http://www.skepticforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=629423#p629423
It's possible that what you hypothesize is correct: the ID anchor might remain in the link even if the destination element ID is gone. Often, folks use what is called "soft delete" which doesn't delete the post entirely--only hides it from everyone except administrators by wrapping it in a DIV element not unlike how the ignore system works. In that case the post and it's ID still exists on the page and the URL will correctly link to it and the page will jump to it. You just can't see it. Yeah, we have ghost posts. Maybe I can try moving the ghost posts but nobody likes that...
I'll have to do some testing to verify that. Unfortunately there's probably nothing I could do to fix it.

Re: Loopy links
Hmm. In that scenario I'd imagine that the system would work. If, even though the entry is "deleted" or "gone" through ignoring it's still being rendered to the html (I haven't inspected the generated html so I don't know if this really is the case) then the links should work ok. Only if the number of entries per page differs from one page to another due to deletions or ignores would this problem occur (if this is really a cause of it). I'd have thought that the php code would either not select deleted/hidden entries in the requested page (so no hidden entry) or would select them regardless, hide the entry but still have it count towards 1 of X entries per page (and risk whole pages of apparently no entries).
So I'm guessing you're saying that this issue should occur only when a post is genuinely deleted?

Not bad. That's on my list of excuses for not having fixed a bug, although it's quite far down. My favourites involve quantum fluctuations or gamma ray bursts flipping bits on the server.

Re: Loopy links
We should be careful on fixing this quirk… Wouldn`t want the forum to become ho-hum normal and without character, or anything like that. Then if we wanted to complain, we`d only have the trolls, the misguided, religious nutters, conspiracy believers, and a few who are all of these.
