That's right. It was much easier in the 1970's. I'd write a letter, commenting on another member's letter and post it by mail to Pyrrho. Pyrrho would cut my letter out and glue it to the bottom of the last person's letter and photocopy it. Pyrrho would then staple all the photocopied topics together and post them back to all them members, each week.

Moderation, back then simply required a thick black marking pen as Pyrrho blanked out offensive words.

Also the topics were simpler

"Apollo 13 : Will it make it back?"
"The micro chip for computers and other American fantasies"
"Why do girls think they deserve similar rights. They don't actually work do they?
"Affordable colour television for everyone? Impossible!"
"Escaped Nazis. How to spot them and make a citizens arrest"
"Cold war is over. Soviet Union will be leading political idealism in 1980's"

I've installed an extension that allows users to "collapse" forum categories. Look for the icon in the right end of the category title bar. Haven't set it up for the Skeptic style yet.

Links work without the [url][/url] tag but if the link is very long it will be displayed truncated.

For example, here is the link to the New York Times subscription page without using [url][/url]:
http://www.nytimes.com/subscriptions/Mu ... MP__=4FWFR

And here it is using [url][/url]:
http://www.nytimes.com/subscriptions/Multiproduct/lp88U46.html?campaignId=4FWFR&CAMP__=4FWFR

You can also use

Code: Select all

[url=http://www.example.com]text[/url]
to display text that links to http://www.example.com.

I moved a topic offline that was essentially a promotional post for a climate change petition. After discussions with the topic author I have agreed that substantive discussion of the petition is acceptable but that merely promoting the petition and urging people to sign it is not. They can try again without the blatant advertising.

Actually, sesame seed oil is slipperier. I had a friend who made Ron Jeremy look like a pencil dick and his wife swore by sesame seed oil. I took her word for it.

I'm trying a thing that allows users to build their own list of words they don't like and replacements for them.

In your User Control Panel, choose the "Censors" tab. From there you can add words and replacements.

http://skepticforum.com/ucp.php?i=260

Conceivably you could even use it to translate NOOALF to proper English.

But as LOSRALF requires the disingenuous misspelling of words in a new way each time they're used it would remain visible garbage on the screen however assiduously we build our lists.

To be thorough, one also has to put in plurals (and tupos!).

But it works beautifully. For a test I picked two pet words of a certain user (p-r-o-d-u-c-t-i-v-e and t-r-a-j-e-c-t-o-r-y), and I just might keep it like that ().

"I have just started a new thread, so this discussion can take a much more unabashed banana henceforth."
