Season's greetings, fellow skeptics!

Postby Nikki Nyx » Sat Dec 23, 2017 7:21 pm

Hope y'all have been fighting the good fight. I'm still alive, but I've been scrambling to get necessary surgery scheduled and done before starting the Humira, so life has been more painful than usual...lol. I finally finished it all, though, and am currently recovering from the last one, although I am presently wondering WTF possessed me to schedule dental (four teeth drilled & filled) and cosmetic (removal of moles & a fatty tumor) in the same week...and the week before xmas too. :shockd:

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the seasonal festivities! Image Image I'm off to play catch-up on what I missed.

Well, removing a fatty tumor before fattening up over the holidays seems a wise decision. Have at it! :ahoy:

Unfortunately, said fatty tumor was lurking under a mole on my forehead. Near my eyes. I did let the surgeon know he could feel free to perform a liposuction while I was under...you know...just to keep his skills sharp.

Have a good one, Nikki. And put the mole back in the garden where it belongs.

Simultaneously, I wish I had waited, and I'm glad it's done. Now I only have the quarterly cleanings to cringe at, not to end a sentence with a preposition, which I didn't.

Niggardly is a special word. Its a good example perhaps thinking you know what a word means....... but you don't. I have used it a few times IN THE PAST to demonstrate this point: that before you go off on a tirade, you really should carefully define the "argument." That always starts by defining the words used in an argument. Niggardly is a good word to demonstrate that issue.

Sadly.................... too many people don't check themselves. They go with their gut hunch. Dictionary? Whats that? I know what words mean!!

So......in the past I would use that word to demonstrate the above. THEN---right here on this forum, I used this word for this purpose and found out the person I used the word with thought of themselves as "of color" and evidently was highly offended by its use. Didn't say why....I was I guess supposed to magically understand why he was offended.

In an offense of another sort, I kinda agreed with him. I assume too many people don't read the dictionary and do not take pleasure in word play. They are offended if words they don't know are used in conversation with them. Refuse to look the words up in a dictionary, do not take pleasure in learning something new, are not enthralled by seeing there might be another way to view an issue.

People are like this.

When I say people are like this, I mean you.

.............and myself as well. What else does a lesson about "people" do except teach us something about ourselves?

So, making MYSELF responsible for any outcome whether responsible or not, give me maximum opportunity: to learn.

I've learned NOT to use niggardly in one on one conversations where race and ignorance may combine. Heh, heh.....that right there is the offense of another sort. But its not. Just a "sensitivity to possibilities" and a strong desire not to purposefully upset anyone.........unless they are begging for it.

That said, nothing wrong with a general broadcast of the word. No one can legitimately, even if wrongly, get upset by its use.

Some might learn a thing or two. The opportunity is there for us all. (pontification/off)

Speaking of words nobody seems to understand anymore: Nigromancy. It's an old variant spelling of necromancy and is now considered something of a misspelling. Today some people think it means "black magic", but the roots of the word necromancy mean "divination from a dead body" (from Greek nekros "dead body" + manteia "divination"), so nigromancy would literally mean "divination from something black or bad" (from Latin nigrum "black, dark, sable, dusky," figuratively "gloomy, unlucky, bad, wicked"). :? It's a hybrid word with a Greek root and a Latin root.

Nigromancy. Another good one that I will not use one on one. What gets me is that given what the word actually means when you look it up in a DICTIONARY and come to know what it means........what meaning is being given to such words by people who choose to become upset? Why not assume/make up/make a mindless connection to Nigromancy means Nigros were meant to rule the world and should be proud of their mastery over all other races? Why assume its a pejorative to be denigrated?.............ha, ha.

Denigrated: I suppose that word should not be used either. Political Correctness...........has no boundary. It would be purely amusing, except some people really do get upset. I wonder how valid the predicate for that over sensitivity is? I don't automatically denigrate it.
