We have some 'nasty' weather happening

Fires burned our trees, now rain is washing everything away in flash floods:

On the upside, two people who by all rights probably should be dead were saved from those floods. You guys have one hell of a SAR service out there.

Yes, we've got some great SAR teams. This is where I get to brag on the H.S. SAR team that my younger son belonged to all through High School. It is completely run/managed/staffed by students, with minor advising by a few adults:

More, and closer to me.... The Peoria/Jewel intersection mentioned in the article is only a few blocks from my house...

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ ... -off-roads

The Utah Park shown/mentioned at the end of the video is the same one as in the title of my latest poetry collection. :D

Rain or not (and it is still raining) I'm going to have to go over and see it this morning.

How bad is it? The news shows a lot of streets with nearly a foot of water. A foot isn't much to look at, and news crews usually go looking for the scariest thing they can find. Last time Winnipeg flooded, the news made it look worse than it was. You can't tell what's really going on by watching the news.

I'd think it's not just the depth. A foot of fast moving water is pretty dangerous?

Hell yes. There's also the matter of some parts being deeper than others, too. You're not going to get a foot of water covering an entire state; you'll get a foot of water covering a lot of parking lots, no water in most places, and ten feet of water in low spots. Where water normally collects in ditches, creeks, and small rivers, you'll get dangerous torrents that people should stay away from but seem to attract looky-loos like lemmings.

Plus there's the erosion that leads to washed-out roads and landslides.

Pretty nasty, here's a cnn article with pics and videos. The worst flooded areas are north of Denver, but we got a bit right here in my neighborhood.

I saw those pics.

But like I said, you can't trust the images shown on the news. For instance, that parking lot of flooded cars could be a wrecking yard. I can't tell! In my experience, photographers will ignore children playing in a playground in order to get the shot of the puddle under the swing set -- happy children don't look good in "disaster photos".

Well, you're a skeptic. If you can't tell, I can't tell you. :D

I'm telling you it's the worst in half a century as best I can tell.

If pictures and videos of houses and cars floating down rivers which have cut 30 foot deep channels through former state highways doesn't convince you then probably nothing will.

Fine up here. I'm on the other side of the hill, and higher. We're faring well, and actually enjoying the moisture. But we're also getting a small percentage of what's happening on the front range. But cheers, I appreciate the concern.

I was just down on the Rio Grande, getting the rest of my hay today. That river is moving, and black from soot from the Wolf Creek fire. I can understand prescientific superstitions, seeing that river.

Here's a collection of videos from Huffington post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/1 ... 21188.html

The rain has stopped/slowed, but we have extremely serious damage to many areas, roads washed out, houses destroyed, rivers running in new channels and apparently the flood is headed for Nebraska with rivers out of their banks....

Still hundreds of people unaccounted for.

Wow... I'm glad you and FTH are well, but hundreds lost in a flood... just wow.

Plus, I've seen the images of highways and bridges just washed away, and it's always a powerful image.

I t may be a long time before we know the true count of how many killed...odds are most of the missing just haven't 'reported in' -- things are still quite a mess up north of here.

Yes and it's been recently ranked high in a few surveys of 'the best places to live' :D

I framed a few houses in Longmont. The afternoon wind would blow from Greeley's way, and it smelled of pure stockyard. Some days it would be a bit overwhelming.

It's too crowded in Colorado, anymore. Of course, I worked with carpenters in C Springs that would tell me about when Acadamy was a dirt road. I have to say that I remember when there was countryside, and bucolic scenery between Boulder and Denver. Even where I live there's a few cars that go by within ten minutes, which it used to be a few an hour, just five years ago. And a few a day about ten years ago when I decided to move here. I know I sound like Davy Crockett deciding to move when he saw the smoke of a campfire to some of you, but Colorado used to be great fun and beautiful. It just seems like one big 7 eleven parking lot, now.

I'm with you completely. I love the advantages of living in Denver, but I think I'd move to the middle of Montana or Wyoming in a snap....and may just do that....or Alaska.....don't like the cold though....
