What TF Are You Watching?

Postby Major Malfunction » Wed Dec 19, 2012 2:29 am

One thing GooToobs is good for is freaky shorts that make you think. Mostly WTF did I just watch? But some are truly thought-provoking, gut-wrenching, works of mind-bending artistry.

Let me give you an example...

Here I propose we share our favourite shorts. Please launder them first, of course.

OK, since no-one is biting, I'll keep the ball rolling with some topical End of the World offerings for us to watch while we implode into a blackhole...

This is more of a teaser, but well worth watching...

UNEARTHED - A SHORT FILM By Dalang Films

I'm biting. I watched the first film. It was very good and certainly would have been a high quality Twilight Zone episode in plot style. The SFX were remarkable verging on major studio level.. (A forum said it was 35mm shot in Death Valley) I looked up Dalang Films to see if it was done by "fans" or "experts". It would appear to be both. Thanks for that. I will watch the next one tomorrow.

(I can't talk about the plot in detail as that would spoil it for others.)

My ulterior motive for this thread is that someone will show us something mind-bending, or thereabouts. Gems of discoveries on their journeys through cyber space and time. The pinnacle of Human art and culture. Or a good shot at it.

Matt. There's room for discussion. But show me something. :wgrin:

Very well spoken. It's a theme to which I subscribe whole-heartedly.

The intent of the thread, however, is scienty fiction. And fantasy. And beautiful awesome everywhere and in between.

Most of my problem is I really don't visit Youtube all that much. And, I'm not really that interested in wallowing in {!#%@} to find that teensy buttercup. You ever see the opening page on Youtube? It is depressing to see what is popular. I just found out about Gangan Style like 3 weeks ago.

Anyway, I don't know if this really fits your criteria, but this guy certainly knows how to relate disturbed/creepiness to the viewing audience. May not be a gem, nor is it all that good of animation, but he can hit emotions pretty good.

This is just the second episode in the series of 9. It gets better and more disturbing in the subsequent episodes.

I introduce to you... Salad Fingers

This is a kids cartoon from Estonia. It is only part 1. But, I can pretty much guarantee you're gonna watch part 2.

Makes you really appreciate Bugs Bunny a little more.

Fair enough.

I first offer a Czechoslovakian surrealist stop animated version of Alice in Wonderland by Jan Svankmajer from 1988. In theory this is the birth of mechanical cyberpunk sculptures. It is extremely weird and interesting. This is the full movie.

If you only want to watch a one minute video, here is Jan Svankmajer's "Meat" which gives you a feel for the style of animation in Alice.

And for lovers of Louis Bunuel, Salvador Dali and melted watches......

For a bit of historical grounding I offer Bunuel's "Un Chien Andalou" (Andalusian Dog). This is from 1928 and contains all the imagery that was also appearing in Dali's paintings. Salvador Dali appears as the priest. It goes for 21 minutes and is representative of the late surrealist movement.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb34uRk85lo

I next offer the opening sequence from Fellini's "8 1/2" which is simply awe inspiring! It is surrealism yet again but 30 years later.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD_kjpGzAIw

And yet the Americans have exactly this same wonderful skill yet in a slightly different format. "Porky in Wackyland"

There's a show on SBS called SOS - Shorts on Screen. It's been running for decades. It used to be called Eat Carpet. I don't know why they changed the name. I love that show! Have you seen it? It's just a bunch of weird short films that often trip me out. Who thinks of dancing steaks?

Do you wonder that America so loved Bugs Bunny?

This was one of the most interesting, entertaining ... even captivating .. threads in the Forum.... where else could "Le Chien Andelou" (et al) make its much needed appearance, offering a chance for wonder to a whole new audience?

Why did it die down?

I recently started watching Dollhouse. I tried it out when it first started on Fox a few years ago but the pilot was just awful but I decided maybe I'd like it better watching several episodes at a time on Netflix. The first four episodes really aren't good at all, but there's a slight improvement in episodes 5-7. Starting with Episode 8 it got really good. I'm halfway through Season 2 now.

Maybe. Maybe not...

This! This is a link I've been trying to rediscover since before I posted this thread, and inspired me to make this thread. And, indeed, take GooToobs for serious. There are whole corn kernels in that gong pit!

GooToobs is like that, huh? You might accidentally an awesome, and never see it again. Or see the same {!#%@} over, and over, and OVER again.

Anyway, it's pretty good animation, if a bit silly. Explosions. Future batteries. Guy should invest in a helmet and some walkin' shoes...

That is pretty cool, although it does suffer from the "bad guys are terrible shots" weakness. It wouldn't have been that difficult to come up with one or more reasons why the technological devices couldn't target the guy any better.

Dude, they were drones and the guy/gal, not sure, had anti surveillance apparel on. You could tell by the face bandana, and the ball cap that doesn't fly off at those speeds. It makes the targeting systems a bit blurry.

See? Easy peasy! They just had to show him flicking a switch called "anti-surveillance apparel ON".
