Today I meet up with a good friend – who flew all the way from California to see me and a few others. Truth be told, I suspect that he wanted to test the waters lest trump actually gets himself elected. But I will caution him, that Tokyo isn`t far enough. Maybe Pluto.

Just over two hours by bus, each way – but on the way back I should be asleep, having consumed my share ... :redwine: Nice being at the end of the route.

Henderson Island is currently uninhabited, and mountainous enough to survive global warming.

Currently uninhabited? I should say so - once cannibalism gets started it`s hard to grow a population.

Doubt that he needed to do so – the Pacific rat being plentiful and all. Not quite cannibalism, but in rat-speak I believe they said a bit old and chewy, but better than cannibalism.

A Friday night, so the Forum is quiet - or is there something else at play?

Feeling much better – maybe not yet 100%, but close. Yesterday I weeded and tore out old tomato, goya, and okra - then tilled the vegetable garden patch, and planted my cabbage, broccoli, and onions. I still need to harvest peanuts and sweet potatoes in advance of planting fava beans, garlic, and snow peas – starting next week.

My honeybee association BBQ is later today, to be followed by an overnight stay with old friends at a hot spring (an onsen), then back home late on Sunday. I`ll enjoy a first sip of beer with good friends at the BBQ after a long dry spell, and then a few more at the onsen.

A few days ago I harvested our peanuts. Instead of simply boiling and eating them soft, this year we added a low temperature roast cycle – and I am eating a few now as I type. Less salt, and no additional flavorings in comparison to the store-bought ones, but good just the same.

Its taken me 2 months to identify and fix an objectionable "hiss and static with reduced volume" artifact being added to my analogue recordings. It fooled me for a time as cleaning contacts helped a great deal, and shortening the audio cables helped some more "almost" to the point of acceptable. I was looking for custom very short very shielded audio cables when it occurred to me to bypass the offending adapter by plugging in the original audio source which was possible by splitting it from the source.

Et viola: got a good clean signal. I HATE IT when brand new hdmi to analogue converters are defective. It amuses me that when considering the digitalization of tv signals that is is SOUND that is so often the problem. To me, there is so much more "data" to be handled in the process but it is the sound that is always off synch or has noise. No way to tell if the converter is defective by design or is just some unique error. But its always good to finally solve a problem.

By coincidence...........after posting I went back to watching tv but the sound was off. Remotes not working...never happened before. I feel empowered that I thought to turn off my two year old tv and turning it back on. Everything back to normal.

We should all be so easy to reboot, even as our batteries are running down......

Cracks me up. My tv is about 20 feet away from my desk where I watch. My tv remotes max distance is 18 feet. I have to stretch my arm out and lean forward for the remote to work. totally fresh batteries and a clean lens. All our tools need "More Power!!" Seems to me the remote worked at distance when the tv was new as I don't recall having the problem until now...but I've done a few other things that "should not" affect the operating distance... but who ever knows?

I would but its behind my desk on which sits my computer and three monitors. Its an old door that sits on three filing cabinets and is fronted by a bookcase and couch. All hard to move. Hmmm...if I moved my big screen forward...I'd lose 2 feet of living room. As my old friend Willy said: "If this were the worst thing that has happened in my life, I'd be a happy man." Willy was an ex-con living a hard life...but his dourness was almost funny.......but I NEVER LAUGHED.

Slightly off topic. My electric bass guitars are all battery powered. They send a powered signal to the pre-amp, specifically to eradicate interference or "hum", on stage, where many wires cross each other. The real nightmare is a stage system where you set up and pull down the entire PA, monitors and stage amps everyday, in a different venue.

Is that why Phil Specter created the Wall of Sound?..... to overwhelm the sound of static???

bobbo_the_Pragmatist wrote:Is that why Phil Specter created the Wall of Sound?..... to overwhelm the sound of static???
No. I think that was him simply creating a "chorus" effect, by having four pianos play at once directly onto acetate. In theory there would be no more "noise" regardless of the number of pianos. Recording studios are pretty well "worked out".

Hum is generally a live phenomena due to the fast set up and something not earthed properly. Generally the same three phase power source, of the venue, is powering stage instruments, the PA, monitors and the entire lighting rig....so it just has more things that can go wrong for the stage electrician.

All Dolby did, from the 60's onwards, was compress the loud bits and expand the quite bits onto the tape and reverse this when playing back, so the white noise, inherent to the tape was reduced on playback.

Just disassemble the remote and add the necessary wires to move the infrared light out that two feet and attach it all to a yardstick. That way the remote and all of the buttons are still in your hand.
