Reality Check: Has London's murder rate overtaken New York's?

Post by bobbo_the_Pragmatist » Sat Apr 07, 2018 2:55 pm

Simple answer: No.

another example of Cherry Picking the data for catching Headlines.

OTOH: its still surprising to me that Murder by Knife could even come close in outlier months to the rate with guns in NYC? I also wonder what the explanation really means: the uptick is caused by gangs and drugs. I catch myself thinking that explanation makes the issue less important...and I note my unthinking racism. Not overt, but still there. Or is it more class divide? Ha, ha........I can't blame guns..... what to do????? My option: stick with the Lake District.

Oh yeah?

Well we still have a bigger subway system and taller buildings.

And nicer looking tall buildings.

Modern vs Art Deco? Gherkin is interesting on first view, but it doesn't hold my attention. I think the Chrysler Bldg is more a classic for the ages. It looks like a building rather than a lamp base.

ymmv.

Interestingly, the gun ownership rate in New York is low by USA standards, which helps to keep the murder rate lower. It is also one of the North West states which have a lower murder rate than the average for the USA. The worst are the ex confederate states which seem to have a strong vigilante ethic, meaning self righteous morons killing each other.

More interestingly is the OP: comparing NYC with London.

Heh, heh. Caught on the news that London, or it might have been the UK, is considering laws against knives. Just like the gun nuts yowled about. Whats next?==>cars?

.............and the answer in a SANE SOCIETY is yes: add up the pros and cons: make a decision.

Its kinda wonderful.....except for the subject.

Knives are odd in the UK. Basically, you cannot carry one unless it's so wrapped up in sheathing and buckles as to be useless in a hurry and, even then, you can't carry it around with you without a damn good legitimate reason.
Except for knives with folding blades not more than 3 inches long (there are loads of legitimate reasons to carry those). But, you know, you can do one hell of a lot of damage with a three-inch blade. I have two Leatherman multitools and both have viciously sharp blades (and I keep them viciously sharp), and I always have one with me as they're so useful. Those things can be dangerous. In fact, I can think of several ways to kill or maim with one of those. But it's a tool, like a chisel, and no one is going to prevent anyone carrying the tools of their trade around. However, if someone had one of those blades at my throat, I'd give 'em everything I had.
In the end, the application of the law is going to be put down to common sense (where it was in the first place) rather than impractical legislation.

There is no common sense in allowing guns......or knives for no reason....or baseball bats....or tire irons.....etc.

I appreciate your sentiment, bobbo, but try telling that to joiners, carpenters, gardeners, model-makers, decoraters, electricians, service engineers of all kinds etc etc etc.

"for no reason" I think is the line to be recognized. TJrandom has posted the law in Japan is that tradespeople CANNOT walk around with their "tools." Rather they have to be packed away and if stopped explain what job they are going to that necessitates their presence.

Common sense: that sense that we share in common, aka: culture.

There are laws here limiting knives, but, oddly, none of them regulate swords. It is legal to carry a meter long sword in your hand as long as you are not threatening anyone with it.

I had to go and check Canada's metrication status. It's depressing. At least beer is still sold in the UK in pints and half-pints.
(How's that for thread derailment?).

I'll drink to that. Note: I have drank beer all over the world and never ordered by volume. AND: I think more universal than "Taxi" is: "Beer." Feeling spunky, one time in Mexico I order a Servicio and got pointed to the bathroom. Not the cerveza I wanted at all. Pronunciation all the more difficult after a few.
