Russia's New Weapons

Postby Tom Palven » Thu Mar 08, 2018 12:08 pm

I can't vouch for the facts in this article, but found it interesting.

Russia, allied with China, now challenges an imperialistic United States with its hundreds of military bases encircling the globe. Shorn of its Soviet socialist republics, this economically small country with its array of hypersonic strategic nuclear weapons developed by bright (white) Russian scientists have eclipsed U.S. military supremacy. The U.S. has met its match militarily and has fallen behind Russia (and China) in the development of hypersonic weapons.

Now that is a tall claim based on the reported info. This is mostly Russian "dont mess with us" posturing with a few novel ways to apply nukes. I dont see the game-changer really.

And what the hell is up with the adding of (white) in there? Allusions to Americas decline being based on darkies' influence?

I agree: going hypersonic doesn't change the biggest equation: MAD. I suppose....it could change if the warheads were mini-nukes...used more as warning shots than the start of a war. Highly risky.....perhaps unless announced first? IOW: hypersonic able to penetrate missile domes....but thats only one scenarios in a field of them.

The Russian developments are probably nothing compared to what China has been doing.

Seems the Pentagon will be learning a lot about disappointment:

Russia claims to have a hypersonic cruise missile - which makes no sense. you can't travel at mach3+ close to the ground. For anti-ship combat it might make sense, but otherwise it is pure BS.

Most hypersonic aircraft only have that "capability" for use in extremis. Normal operation is below Mach One. It saves fuel, improves loiter time or range.

There is already a thread about this.
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=29185

The 2018 presentation by Putin was an ongoing series of announcements about the conclusion of the Serdyukov military reforms, started in 2009 and due for completion in 2018. In essence, it is about converting the Red Army from a conscription army to a professional volunteer army with new equipment.

The Russian had to open two new NCO academies to create an educated military class, to operate more complex equipment. Previously, Russia's equipment was "low tech" and "high volume" to accommodate a military where lesser educated people only lasted a couple of years.

The NCOs are now graduating and we see new tanks like the T-14 and T-15 entering full production. We see Russia changing its standard assault weapon for the new "gee wizz" AK-12 Kalashnikov. We see the new Russian fighter bombers enter production for the Red airforce.

I agree with you, that apart from the infinite range cruise missile and new drone torpedoes, there is nothing really new in its multiple warhead ICBMs except better targeting. If anything the presentation about high tech weapons is a distraction from its new conventional land equipment.

I also agree with you that it is silly to compare these reforms to China and the USA and say "The USA is declining" as there are simply too many factors to allow any meaningful comparison.

China's army is still conscription based and less than 18% of males actually bother reporting. It's high volume weapon system are rudimentary, reflecting a conscript army's low technical knowledge base. China's Central Military Commission said it would consider converting to a professional army in 2016 but nothing has happened.

China's current main battle tank, the 99A, has a unique smoke screen defence. It's called its engine which always disintegrates after about 100 hours of use. The tank is worthless and basically an upgraded Russian T-72 from the 70s.

Yeah, that was freaky weird. Everyone knows America's decline isn't due to the darkies; it's due to the whities who can't spell!

Russia's new weapons are horrendously expensive if you factor in how cheap labor and materials are in the CIS. Furthermore, it is unlikely that Russia can provide the technical assistance necessary to keep modern weapons functional on battlefields in far-away countries.

I think Tom has to be a bit more critical to his sources, as this was basically regurgitating Russian propaganda about their military capabilities.

I'm guessing it's the comglomeration of gung-ho russia support that is tied in with white nationalism (which also is something Russia is supporting). WN looks to russia's ethno-nationalism and sees a soulmate there. (Russians are mostly "white" as well!!) It's no longer the far-left that look to Russia, now it's the racist right that do. My, how times have changed...

I regard the Lew Rockwell site as quite cranky in general as well.

Yep - a bit of common sense from OoB. There is ALWAYS the possibility that Putin is simply lying through his teeth. Given his reasons for being where and what he is (which are, very simply, to make Putin a very rich and powerful person), a full-blown war would make holes in his bank accounts. It's a much better idea to make unsubstantiated claims in the hope that the US, in particular, commits lots more money and effort to new weapons they don't need.

One thing we can be certain of is that Putin is lying through his teeth. The problem is determining which part isn't lies.
