Computer Gripes, Fixes, Questions, Hints, or just tech

Postby bobbo_the_Pragmatist » Wed Feb 21, 2018 3:32 am

Starting this thread as I have posted some of my computer questions in more general threads. Nothing to oil or grind here.

but I'm motivated to post because I found a program that actually works just as we all would want it to, and as ALWAYS, IT IS FREE:

https://www.partitionwizard.com/downloa ... grayed-out

On a brand new installation of Win 10, the "extend partition" command in Disk Manager was grayed out. Partition Manager, EaseUse, and 2-3 other programs also did not work to expand a middle partition into the two partitions on either side of it.

Found the program above and it clearly and quickly allowed me to change the Disk from MBR to GPT, deleted and formated the two neighboring partitions, AND allowed the middle partition to be Merged into the to other partitions, one at a time. Maybe....the partition could have "extended" into the unallocated space....but I was too anxious and just did what worked. Now I have my full 3TB disk back to use. I'm almost happy.

I don't need to do it now, but I assume this nice little program will also work to clone partitions and so forth. Sad that a fresh installation of Win10 could not do this simple function....nor the big name Paid For programs which also have had problems in cloning the OS. Fingers crossed.

I do want to get my Win10 system up and running as desired as it is NECESSARY to run Virtual Reality. When I have Win10 the way I want it, I'll build my next computer....I usually build 1-2 steps above minimum specs (to save $$) but this time I'm thinking to build 1-2 steps below TOP GRADE (to pleasure myself, allow for future proofing the VR field which is already demanding higher than entry specs, .....and did I say to pleasure myself? That will be true if I stick to my plan to go with Intell, rather than at the last minute swerve into higher performing cheaper AMD...but then always with the loss of some feature I want like fast synch?

Pros and Cons to all we do.

My latest gripe iz LightWorks video editor. It worked great, but then it didnt work at all. I hav the free version and the lisens expired. I didnt hav a project that I really wanted to do, so didnt risk connecting the computer to the internet just to renew.

I will probably get another old computer for cheaps just for doing videoz. That way, wen it gets messed up from being on the web, nothing else iz at risk.

Linux doesn't run Virtual Reality....or much of it...... or too much of it.

Chrome: haven't used but I keep seeing the push towards it
M$--you'd think they would make simple fixes that their community has been clamoring for for years: like accurate folder size reporting? a disk manager and back up function that actually worked? File search that could actually find something?...and so on, but no. Instead, we get breaks in programs that were working perfectly fine..I keep forgetting where task manager is in Win 10. Why on earth move it?????? And task manager still shows near zero activity while my machine is clogged up and sticking on "something." I Hope Bill is happy touting the world with his wifey is an equal partner in running his charities. Maybe that works?
Google: yea verily. I notice last year the search results aren't what they used to be. Now the first few if not first page are more "consumer" oriented rather than "issue" oriented. There ought to be an app for that?

Jo: hesitant to connect to the Internet? That is more paranoid than myself. but I do rarely if ever open any attachment or link without a second look see. One of the main reasons to upgrade is to get video processing power. The old computers not up to the task as time goes by? I've used "sandboxed" programs as well as Virtual Machines to protect against internet harm...but find it frustrating when I do want to download something. What has worked for me...multiple back ups of the OS on other hard drives. The very purpose of my OP. No need then to try to find a program that is not a Virus itself to clean up whatever rootkit has been installed........just switch hard drives to a back up and you are good to go.

I just got an XBox type Game Controller good for android and computers. Will be fun to see if I can get it connected to FireStick and my Computer at the same time........or only one or the other. Can't tell from the description.

Bobbo, I'm just an average computer user, but to find task manager, from anywhere, just hit control-alt-del, and it will appear. That is one thing I use quite a lot.

Unfortunately, I can't afford the latest, you beaut, computer, so I have to put up with my old "horse & buggy" computer. So when I try to do too many things, it will go spastic. That is where task manager is great. I can call it up, and kill whatever is "killing" my computer.

Actually like chrome Bobbo, seems to work well, is quick, doesn't seen to fail or breakdown, so yeah, I think a good platform.

As for google and M$, well what do you really expect? They are so commercial, but we don't really have a lot of alternatives do we. They do sort of work, although I don't disagree with your views. Just bloody commercialism. Doesn't matter how rich they get, or how philanthropic their owners are, they will always be looking for ways to make more $. Then they can continue to be philanthropists and say "What a good boy am I". It's just the real world mate, not necessarily the one we want, but that's life.

thanks Phoenix: I have gotten so used to my Task Manager Shortcut being pinned to my activity bar...I forgot the 3 finger salute...even after using it a few times on the Win 10. If Win 10 allows for a default to Chrome....I'll give it a look...thanks.

Not paranoia kuz it iz prooven. The last time I had my main comp connected it woud get slower and slower, then totally lock up within 6 months. That wuz with doing regular defragz. I woud reformat and reinstall XP for another 6 months uv bugz, virusez, extortion attempts. After taking it offline around 2007, it worked fine, aside from its orijinal bugz. It still works fine, but I rarely turn it on kuz I got a newer machine with Win7 64 bit wich I hav only occasionaly connected to the web to get stuff, then disconnect ASAP.

I liked win XP, as always because it ran the programs I wanted to use but it did seem to me to slow up and need rebooting all too often and even breaking which got me to my back up regime. Most of those problems were in fact fixed with win7 which I probably will keep "forever" using win10 only to explore Virtual Reality ...maybe even on its dedicated machine. Other benefit I could use would be the speed of USB 3 as I do a lot of file transfers.

Point is: I surf the internet without too many issues. I do have 3-4 anti-virus programs in place but they don't appear to do much...maybe once a month warn me not to download or connect to a website which I comply with about half the time.

Hmmm....I'm thinking that its not "being connected to the internet" that is the/your issue but rather surfing or downloading? I've thought for a long time that a tablet set up just to surf the internet might be a good investment? Get a larger tablet and play games with it too? Use it as a phone? Yes....lots of reasons to have a "Web Surfing Appliance" to keep your computer "clean."

I got a solid state drive to play with....the prices keep coming down. The 120GB drive seems like a good choice to mount your OS on and get all that nice speed.....but again...BACK IT UP to another drive. Haven't done it yet myself....too busy.

My biggest gripes about software:
1. Poorly designed user interface, especially when visual design overrides functionality. I don't care if you're the the Picasso of graphic designers, do NOT replace well-known icons with your own versions. And make all toolbars customizable by the user.
2. Lack of functionality...I'm looking at you, MS Word. Try to be more like WordPerfect and less like a hot mess.
3. Unnecessary bells and whistles, like elaborate decorations, functions no one uses, and such. It's annoying that I can't delete apps I'll never use from my iPhone. (I shove them all into a folder labeled "crApp.")
4. Bloated code, so that it takes forever for the program to load.
5. When uninstalled, doesn't delete ancillary files. It's a monthly chore to troll around in "Application Support" and other system folders to delete ancillary files leftover from software I've trashed. When you leave, take your {!#%@} with you!

Nikki: yea Verily, with the kicker being: They Know...and just don't care. How many glitches came out and were reported in 1.0 that are still there with 5.6?===>too many.

Here is a real "basic" gripe/remedy: whenever software makers "make a choice" about how something is presented and there are well known/understood alternatives (such as how it was done in the previous version)==>GIVE THE USER A CHOICE.

I think a well known singular example is when xp went to 7, users for a time had an option to "revert" back to the "Start Menu" of the older system. Another simple example that seems to be accepted is offering users the choice between Centigrade and Fahrenheit?

Heres another general bummer: program menus that open up to a set screen size that cannot be altered...especially when it is so small all the relevant data cannot even be displayed. Why do they do that?

I currently have my OS backed up to 5 other hard drives that are old drives without space for much more. Its been about 6 months so I decided to start cloning my current drive to them. RATS. First 4 programs I started only clone entire disks rather than partitions which is all I want to clone. Finally got one that clones just a partition...it cloned but then the resulting disk would not boot...so no joy. All the folders were there but a few windows files has not been copied over...why not? So, I used a Sixth program to copy just one partition and it started by doing a disk check and said the partition could not be cloned because of "errors." I had to know myself to run chkdsk c: /r to fix my OS...and it did find errors, so....now to rerun the program to see if it will clone to a rebootable drive. My fingers are crossed.

1. Why doesn't a clone program just DO WHAT IT SAYS IT DOES? Just copy a partition sector by sector with no changes? If the original partition will boot...so should the copied partition? Noting their are check disk errors is good info to have...but why should a clone be prevented from running? Makes no sense at all to me.

2. Of constant concern: why does a cloned disk hardly used at all except to confirm it will boot and work and then is not touched for 6 months refuse to boot when called upon? What's going on here with THAT? Cosmic rays? The magnet on my key chain got too close? ......... Irritating. The drive in question gives the final start up music but nothing appears on the screen. I assume this could be fixed if I had an operating disk?

So...right now...out of 5 Hard Drives...I only have two that will boot. Indeed, it was time to back up my OS and check my programs. I'm currently using Win 7 as I'm used to it. I have two drives running Win10 to work its bugs out and 3 different Linux systems on single disks. I'll report back when I get all win 7 drives in ship shape.

Hobbies are........fun?

I could/should wait for the end...but its aggravating and who know if I won't torch my computer and be off line for awhile, so, like a bomb squad, I post so you can learn from my errors?

Well, the program that checks disks before allowing the clone still finds some error that M$ chkdsk does not find. So...can't use that program at all. I'll run check disk again later although it did take an hour or more last time for 80GB of data...so...I am using TeraCopy to copy my C Drive OS over to the Clone that won't boot. Hopefully, the cloned image has all those "super technical" files cloned that copy programs don't do accurately, and my additave tera copy will provide the 1.2 GB of missing windows files and .......what...I have a 10% change the cloned disk might boot?

If not, I've gone thru all 8 cloning programs I have and need to find another FREE one that will work on my chk disk corrupted system? alternative: go ahead and clone the entire 2TB disk. I wanted to avoid that as the storage space on the disk can be updated using file sync in about 15 minutes whereas cloning them takes overnight. but in this pragmatic universe, sometimes we are reduced to doing what works. "Kluge" is such an apt sounding name for that process..........

I'm going thru all my cloning programs I have collected over the years. they all worked at one time or another but not now. Came across Macrium which does not clone but rather creates a recovery image. So, I'm doing that and will see if I can copy that image to the new partition. Seems to me a few years ago....it did not work. after this, I'll have to search for some new cloning programs to try...so many of them...just find what will actually work?===>OR==>should I try to find out what chkdsk is missing and fix that? All i want is what I have: a partition that boots and runs all my programs?

BUT...going thru my program files, I am reminded of another "issue" I haven't been able to get work "really well" and that is whole screen recordings of HDTV streaming. I have gotten smaller images but when full screen full 1080 hdtv the final results have all been choppy with dropped frames. My system is only "just capable" of recording in real time...so it should handle full screen recording....but maybe not? My alternative is to put this on hold waiting for my next build of a faster computer. Related Issue: finally figure out how VLC player either screen recorders or capture/converts "any" web address. I have dabbled with it but found it a bit confusing or not working for me. Hate it when I follow a procedure and my screen shots don't match what the YouTube videos show. Whats up with that?

Thanks Jo: no, no payment. Actually getting a bit "worrisome" as I'm now starting to doubt that doing disk to disk cloning as opposed to partition to partition may no longer work as well. Just used two programs that required the copy to be made to an "unallocated" space on the disk, so I went ahead and deleted the target partition so the programs would work...but end result after "a successful clone" was a partition that would not boot. ........... WHY NOT?????

Gonna do check disk again, hope that fixes what "all" the programs may be stumbling on.....although the last program made a complete exact copy as much as i can tell from looking at the file structures...but "no joy." It does look like disk to disk cloning may be my only option. I can do that, its just not as "fast" or elegant..........and that is my self image--don't ya know?

Well..........the Kluge worked. I have tested 8-10 popular well advertised programs. Most of them do not even offer partition cloning: only whole disk cloning or they clone a partition but take up the entire new disk not allowing for updating a two partition drive.

Fair enough. I will just clone entire disk and take 6-8 hours rather than clone just the OS partition that only takes 40 minutes. IIRC I did single partition cloning without issue some years back? Ha, ha...and as "I didn't want to do it" it was late last night that I went ahead and did the whole disk cloning routine and I was too sleepy to record what program I used. I assume all of the whole disk cloning programs will work.....I just don't want to do exactly that.

Thanks for the offer Jo....but I found most programs that worked with XP don't work with win7. I think they do that on purpose to sell new programs? aka: they "could work" but then are disabled by some code.

Well, THAT was fun: for the last 3-4 days, my remotes for comcast DVR have been slowly failing/glitching on sound control over the TV, then channel selection and so forth, then...no control at all. Put batteries in the original Vizio remote and it did not work either...so, I'm thinking its my tv and not my remotes. So...I rebooted the tv and all is good now. My question: how is the safety of a driving car to be maintained when simply tv's need a reboot from time to time? Are they really, really, really.....doing something better/more redundant with car AI than with tv remotes?

Evidently, and I hope so.

Yes I agree. got my 65inch dirt cheap at Walmart on Black Friday. I thought it was ridiculously too large as I drove it home...now, I can't see watching tv without it. Mine is about 3 years old now and the "smart" tv part of it freezes and is choppy but the Firestick for $25 is nice and smooth. Everything else about it is just fine in my book. maybe the blacks are overly blocky which is fixed by the newer HDR sets...but its tolerable. My computer is hooked up to HDMI No 3. Fun to control YouTube with my gamepad bluetoothed to my computer. I am now a creature of my lazy boy.

Even tho its only 720p, thats fine for viewing the interweb.

Just remembered I got a pik uv my setup with it on the Nooalf site: http://www.nooalf.com/JOBLoG3.html

My first chuckle today ... I went to your site, JO, and my machine asked if I wanted it to be translated   I've been there lots of times and never been asked that before.
EDIT: So I got a translation. It takes a long time before you get the 'Translated' message - but nothing's been translated.

I took the precaution uv turning the main text into a picture. Therez a little statement at the bottom in actual text that Google mite try to tranzlate. Last time I let it try, it mangled it into unintellijability. I wanted to giv it a try now, but Google iznt offering to try and therez no tranzlate button to be found.
