Paul is a movie.
It is about some British guys who are in an RV in the USA and they pick up an alien hitch hiker. It is a delightful movie, even though as improbable as Hades. But the British sense of humor is rife, and makes it great.

Watched it today. Not bad. A few chuckles and lots of geek culture references.

Paul is the name of the alien guy who manages to crash his spaceship somewhere in the (Arizona?) desert just as the two tourists from England pass by in their rented RV.

They stop, investigate and find an alien sitting on a rock greeting them with Hi! I am Paul, how are you guys?
I liked the movie as well.

We've got pocket computers and flying cars and skateboards, but I'm still waiting on delivery of my Kickstarter RoboMaidTM.

Keep in mind that if life ever evolved on Mars, it evolved under those conditions. The environment would not be toxic to it, as it is to Earthly bacteria which did not evolve under those conditions. The environment would be part of its heritage.

Oleg

That is fine and dandy as a general principle, but there are some things it is not possible to evolve resistance to. For example, nothing made of carbon compounds could evolve resistance to fire or volcanic lava. The same applies to some chemicals, including strong oxidisers, which attack and destroy any and all organic compounds. Perchlorate is one of them. Combined with ultra violet, it would be impossible to withstand.

Any life that formed would have to find a niche with no perchlorate and out of the sun. Not impossible, of course, and we are yet to discover whether the perchlorate is everywhere, or whether there are possible sanctuaries for life.

An environment with free O2 is toxic to organisms which evolved in a reducing atmosphere. Yet both aerobes and anaerobes evolved here, and both flourish in their niches.

Simple differing chemistries is a whole nuther kettle of fish from a magma environment.

Yes, but 02 is not corrosive, and perchlorate is. Not the same thing.

Why not read the article, Lance?

The perchlorate problem is now, not when there was liquid water and enough atmosphere to hold it.

Perchlorate breaks down proteins, so it's corrosive properties are more . . . spectacular.

And oxygen corrodes metal to dust. Or to '58 Chevrolets.
