Banning straws?

Post by Gord » Mon Aug 27, 2018 6:58 pm

Have you heard about all the people who want to ban plastic drinking straws? Many companies are getting rid of them in response. I thought it was a good idea -- in fact, I haven't even really questioned it much, except as my normal pessimistic worldview demands I do instantly upon first hearing of anyone wanting to do anything helpful to the environment.

But this guy has made me think:

That guy's a funny youtube video maker, so I don't trust his numbers at all. But he's still got me wondering about this.

Who knows anything about the proposed plastic straw bans?

It is true that they are a significant environmental problem and that we can do without, most of the time. If shops only handed them out on request, we could probably reduce waste from them by 60% at least.
As with most environmental issues, using taxes to shift behavior is much, much better than bans, and the revenue can be used to offset the damage.

I never use straws. They are idiotic. Drink liquids from a glass. Go ahead and try it. It is easy.

I only use straws with milkshakes.

My sister, on the other hand, has multiple sclerosis and sometimes needs a straw to drink coffee. Even those "special lids" don't help her. I wonder what she'll do if they ban straws?

No problem, Gord. There are paper straws available. Good for single use, but biodegradable. It is idiotic to use plastic ones. Criminal in my view.

Don't paper straws have a large carbon footprint, though?

There are reusable (dishwashable) straws of various materials available.

I have vacuum mugs with lids and those came with rubber straws. Been using the same ones for five years now. "Dishwasher safe". (No, Gord, I don't keep my money in the dishwasher.)

If he makes it in the bathtub, he would have to bottle it. With a glass, he just has to dip it.

I wish people would ask before giving me a straw or a plastic bag. I almost never want a straw and I only want a bag if I have more items than I can easily carry (which obviously varies depending on what the items are).

I like the deposit system - take a deposit of say... $2US for every straw and reimburse $1.5 upon return. That`ll solve it real fast. Heck, it might turn me into a beach comber.

Has anyone else not forgotten the difference between risk avoidance and risk assessment?

* Risk management involves using risk-assessment principles to take a calculated risk, in order to achieve a favorable risk vs. reward ratio.

* Risk avoidance is the business of becoming hysterical and fearful of a name, running from all perceived risk, and drumming up fears in others, calling for bans; in lieu of a reasoned response.
The job of a skeptic is to investigate the unexplained; not to explain the uninvestigated.

Erm… Actually.. Risk avoidance is the elimination of hazards, activities, and exposures that can negatively affect an organization's assets, whereas risk management aims to control the damages and financial consequences of threatening events...

Risk mitigation is taking actions that reduce the impact of a risk, should that event actually occur, to a level that is acceptable from a cost perspective. No histrionics or fear need be involved.

Eliminating plastic waste has nothing to do with histrionics or hysteria. It is a reasoned response to a genuine problem. I have spent enough time cleaning beaches to know just how many bits of plastic pollute the place, and that includes plastic straws, which are stupid and useless things.

I have also done enough scuba diving to see how much of this crap makes its way into the ocean, and my reading tells me of the vast amount of microplastic pollution which harms marine life. Get rid of the crap.

I'd be breaking my own promise, were I to elaborate. I don't want to tread on the ground that descries the tribal nature of some of these debates.
For my part, I'll agree to disagree.

Surely, contrary to this article that claims plastic is killing whales – whales themselves are producing plastic and regurgitating it into the sea, and when that fails – beaching themselves so that the plastic in their gut will pollute the beach and spoil the human beach experience.
