I agree it "can" be that.....but lots of other things too. I can't think of any THING that means only one thing. Whats missing in a lot of the presumptions is the context in which the same act takes place. Offering a drink to a woman at noon at a family picnic or at midnight at a meat market pick up jive....two wholly different things.

So many rules and regulations!
I don't think I'm abnormal in any way, but never once have I sidled up to a woman I've never met before in my life and offered to buy her a drink. I wouldn't do it to a man either. The reason is the same in both cases. On the other hand, if I've been talking to someone for a while and my glass is empty, I'm going to buy another drink and common courtesy would then prod me into offering a drink to whomsoever I was talking to. Most women I know are not casual pushovers and most men I know are not gonads on legs - so I'm no expert on transactional booze baiting - so what I want to know is ... when did this (apparently) become the norm?

I can honestly say I've never pressured a woman. Probably missed some fun, but when I woke the next I didn't feel like a heel.

Well, its clear to me that some men hang out in bars, and others hang out in forums. Apparently....very little overlap across a wide number of characteristics...........

I met three of my wives after I got on the Internet. I never spent much time in bars.

Never was a norm for me, but then I don`t frequent pick-up bars.

Accepting a drink is nothing more or less than an acknowledgment that having social interaction wouldn't be a violation of norms.
It doesn't create any obligation, not even of courtesy.

I dunno... It sure seems there is a lot of ownership going on…Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle… See the pyramids along the Nile… Just remember darlin', all the while… You belong to me … Just remember when a dream appears… You belong to me … Just remember 'til you're home again… You belong to me… You belong to me. Or at least the King of Cool thought so.

Works both ways. "That's my man!" Andy Capp's wife used to beat up bar flozzies that were getting too chummy with Andy. And so on.

I woke up remembering that I have NEVER introduced myself by buying a drink for anyone. What I've done is been in conversation with someone and it was time to refresh or to order. Buying someone a drink strikes me as something cheesy you mostly see in movies to show that some guys are jerks or that the targeted women have standards when they refuse the offer or are looking for action when they accept. ie: a trope.

and that reminded me of the one of two times a lady offered to buy me a drink....just like in the movies with the role reversal. A second class hotel bar before midnight. I was an obvious tourist, she was very French with a wonderful voice and accent and a bit of a language barrier. I still think she was a professional waiting for me to make the offer....but I declined to do so, so we just had a nice conversation for about 10 minutes. She said she was waiting for a friend, sex of friend not identified, and I said I had stopped just for a quick nightcap. I dunno....sex with strangers....a bit meaningless, but so is tennis.

I have bought drinks for people and had drinks bought for me, but like bobo, it was never the opening interaction. Like Poodle said, we're both usually already both having a drink and when it runs out, either I've offered to get them another or they've offered to get me one.

For instance, in a Flying Saucer. :P

Thats not what you said. Sweeping generalizations don't allow for single swinging dicks.

If you've got enough room to sweep a generalisation you've got enough room to swing a dick. No dick is as big as a generalisation.
There, stick that on a T-shirt.

And then, days later, it was found that no single dick was long enough to make a swing.

My tshirt says: "Im with stupid."

So...we have the dimension correct. Now all you have to recognize is that a sweeping generalization takes up ALL THE ROOM. So...you are right only in the sense that you can have a sweeping generalization OR you can have a swinging dick: but you can't have both. choices.

Life is like that.

Indeed. As the ancient Chinese proverb says "Man with dick out must come to point".
