Our regulars start at about 60k, and double that if deployed.

US that would be an O-3 paygrade (O-1 (ensign) to O-10 (full admiral) ). I was E-4, Petty Officer Third Class at the time. I arrived as an ENFN, or E-3.

WWII was the result of a total arsehole getting into power. Right now, both NK and the USA have total arseholes in power, so things are a bit shakey.
Jimmy Carter might make another trip to North Korea, and if so it just might help the situation:

The US pay is still pretty {!#%@} for that rank these days! $27k?!? A Seaman gets $46k in the RAN. Even taking into account currency and living expenses, that sounds like a shitty deal.

But we were in it for the glory, not the pay.

We're not going to have WWIII, we're going to have a new island in the Pacific, called "Korea".

I've heard lots of stories, and it's mostly about luck and regret.

A proxy war with nukes will make for more than one island.
It could play out like this...Trump hits NK just N of the DMZ and Pyongyang – but the nuclear cloud drift upsets China which sees an opportunity to take Formosa. Russia takes Hokkaido and China retakes Okinawa, the Senkakus and SK. Trump hits Iran and Venezuela (just for grins). Russia retakes all of the Ukraine. NK hits Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska. China hits Washington from NK, trying to put the blame on Rocket Boy. Trump (who no longer exists) hits Beijing from retaliatory subs on standing orders. Putin takes what is left of Europe. Etc., etc. It will never be called WW3 simply because there won`t be enough people alive who know how to write.

Well, that one ended with a bang or two, but since we have WMDs the "don't get stupid" factor is way up.
