Did Shermer really say Trump is good for atheism?

How should we think about weird things?

Did Shermer really say Trump is good for atheism?

Postby Abdul Alhazred » Mon Apr 17, 2017 2:15 pm

Peezus says he did.

http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... ts-tracks/

Disclaimers:

1) I have no confidence in Peezus.
2) I am no Trump fan, either.

So? More drama in the atheism fandom? :pr:

I am guessing that Peezus is distorting something Shermer really said.

Anybody here know what's up?

PZ and Watson are drama queens that like to stir {!#%@} up. Sure, I'm not in agreement with Shermer in that "it's refreshing" but he can have whatever opinion he wants. He's not endorsing the prick. It's not the nonsense " end of atheism" hyperbole PZ is making it out to be. He's just running around with his head on fire as per usual.

Trump sounds to me to be a mainstream Christian … so much hate, so many failings...

Trump pandered openly to the Religious Right. He got the endorsement of James Dobson, Tony Perkins, Robert Jeffress, and Jerry Falwell Jr. He is against women’s right to choose, and wants to shut down Planned Parenthood. He’s a racist who appoints racists to positions of power. He’s a temperamental militarist. He despises science and wants the phrase “climate change” expunged from our scientific institutions. He has Betsy Devos working to dismantle our educational system. He appointed as Vice President a Christian dominionist and patriarchal tool who dreams of oppressing the LGBTQ community.

In this context "mainstream Christian" means nominal civic piety. Like Nixon saying "God bless America".

I don't see that as overwhelmingly different from Obama or Hillary, unless you buy the story that Obama is secretly a radical Muslim and Hillary a Satanist.

Short version "distorting something Shermer really said". :)

PZ is off the wall about Pence being a "Dominionist", too.

That means someone who reject all existing civil authority because it is unbiblical.

I feel like an idiot. I read Politico every morning and never noticed that Michael Shermer wrote that editorial. :D

That isn`t what I mean by `mainstream Christian` - IMO it means intolerance, racism, greed, hate, self righteousness...

Nah, I just traced it back via google, read a bit, and sez to myself, " that looks to be the source" Read a bit more and saw that what Shermer said wasn't exactly how PZ was framing it. In the search I saw that Rebecca Watson was on board too, though I didn't read her site. Perhaps I should, if I were a decent Skeptic, but I think I'll be disappointedly unsurprised. I'm not particularly loyal to Shermer, but I don't see that he tends to get his feathers up over an opinion. Nor has he ridiculed me personally on his site for disagreeing with his choice of pet food. Lol. True story

As an older fellow who grew up lefty in New York City, I know Trump as a billionaire landlord union buster. Also a publicity hound, unlike others of that type.

So there's definitely greed.

But I'm not seeing the other things on your list, unless it's guilt by association with his brand new chums.

He is a former Hillary donor, you know. ;)
